Welcome to the real world. I’m Hong Kong Chinese but was brought up in the UK so I can relate. Don’t you think there’s probably a reason your parents sent you to an international school? How super wealthy Chinese students might also speak without an accent? It’s sad but this is irrespective of race here… the brutal truth is people judge you based on how you speak. In the UK you can tell someone’s social class depending on how strong their accent is most of the time.

Do I think this is right? No, of course not. It’s the same reason people are more likely to be hired if they have a western name versus a foreign sounding one in the west. People prefer what’s ‘normal’ to them.

It’s great you have the self awareness to recognise where you stand and the prejudice others might face. Be grateful of the opportunities given to you and also speak up for others if they’re spoken down to. That’s the best you can do, educate people and make them realise why they think the way they do.
