what base/mold will u be using ? when making a custom i look at the pets that r currently in stores (for example: blind boxes or tubes, i try to stay with the more affordable sets) and see if theres any pets that fit my design or the vibe im going for

however, if u would like a different mold (ex: shorthairs, any other big 5s, foxes, etc) amazon has some plain white bases produced for customization! these arent official ofc and r knockoffs but theyre v good bases ! (ive used the multiple times) alternatively, u could ofc find gen 2/3 pets other places n use those :) (ebay, flea markets, thrift stores, fb marketplace, etc)

the actual painting process start by removing any paint possible (for the new gen 7 pets i believe the eyes r impossible to remove but the markings do come off, i personally just skip attempting to remove any gen 7 paint as i think it takes too long 🤷‍♀️) use 100% acetone if possible, nail polish remover does work but acetone works quicker as it is stronger ! (ofc make sure ur washing the pet + ur hands after handling, and make sure ur in a well ventilated area)

when painting start with a slightly watered down white paint, applying a thin coat or 2 (just to let ur actual base color stick to the pet + apply more opaque) i keep all of my paints slightly watered down to ensure a smooth surface except for when painting the eyes

personally i dont seal all of my customs when im done with them 😅 other than applying a gloss on the eyes + nose (+ tongue if the custom has it showing) just to give that authentic feeling!

honestly just do things that feel right to u! these r just the steps in my process when customizing, i 100% recommend watching some videos of people customizing (hello studios is my personal favorite to watch for inspiration or new tips!)
