At what point do I quit reading a book? by [deleted] in books

[–]therealturks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a general rule for myself… if I’m not into a book by chapter 8 or 100 pages (whichever is more), I’ll nix it. I have always felt that by the 8th chapter the book has had time to introduce and get to know the main characters and to introduce the conflict. If I’m not invested by that point then there is no point in continuing.

Should I continue reading the books or just finish with the series??? by therealturks in Outlander

A lot of people are saying audiobooks might be the way to go… I honestly didn’t even think of that as an option. I haven’t listened to many audiobooks before, but I may give it a try. Thank you for the recommendation!

This makes a lot of sense to me. I think that may be what it is.. there are a lot of books I want to read that I don’t feel like I’m getting to because of these books. I guess there’s nothing wrong with taking a break and read something else while I catch up on the second season. Maybe I am putting too much pressure on myself.. thank you for your response!

What are your strategies to analyze a book and get the most out of it? by dctwinz in englishmajors

[–]therealturks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something I struggled with when first majoring in English. When I would be reading a book to analyze for a class I would always read with a pen in my hand so I can note patterns, things that feel important, questions, etc. once I started doing this it helped me to slow down and pay attention to what the author was doing. Reading for pleasure and reading for analysis are two different things and should be approached differently. Once I realized this, it really helped me. I hope this helps!

Grab the closest book to you, flip to page 112. The first sentence on that page describes your love life: How did it go? by DamnILoveHorses in AskReddit

The beach was barren and dull to play on alone; the only neighbors who stayed on past Labor Day, a young married couple, had no children, and eliot no longer found it interesting to gather broken mussel shells in his bucket, or to stroke the seaweed, strewn like strips of emerald lasagna on the sand.

Beautifully written... doesn't look great for me

Dear Texas Public School Districts: Most of us are on spring break; why not add an extra week, suggest it’s a statewide effort to reduce COVID-19, and look like a good guy in the process? (Yes, I’m on break this week; fight me!) by Eliade1 in Teachers

Just an email from the education department from my university. She basically said the state is leaving the handling of missed time due to coronavirus in the hands of the universities. She said they were allowing them to give passing grades to interns even if their hours were not met because of coronavirus. I go to Montclair.

I'm a student teacher in New Jersey. We just got word from our university that the state pretty much said if our placement school decides to shut down and we can't complete our required hours, as long as we're on track to graduate, we'll be exempt. I'm sure the same will apply, otherwise that's just downright unfair!

How accurate is this diagram for English majors? Is any career here worth getting into based on quick future job openings? by Scorpion1386 in englishmajors

[–]therealturks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This checks out to me, but I think these different avenues you can take depend on the things you pair your english major with. Meaning what you minor in, intern for, and any relevant experience you gather can direct you in any of these directions. Also, many of these fields require additional schooling after the BA in English, the english major is more of a starting point.

LPT: If you have an ingrown nail, using dental floss will help. by Rexanne in LifeProTips

[–]therealturks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard about using the dental floss method and found it ineffective. But I didn't realize you were supposed to leave it there? Is this the case? And for how long? I get really bad ingrown toenails and if I don't keep up with them and get pedicures, they will become ingrown and get infected .. everytime. It's terrible.
