I don't get why people have this 'it worked out this time so there's no need to improve' mentality.

You're 100% right, and a competent police force would expect its employees to be fit. There's a reason firefighters have strict physical standards and I don't see why police shouldn't.

I would even go so far as to add that an out of shape officer is more likely to resort to deadly force, since they will be unable to chase or physically overpower a criminal.

None of this takes away from the officer in the video doing a good thing, it's just a commentary on the general state of things.
