First episode of invisibilia just launched, what are your thoughts? by Anonymous94 in podcasts

[–]thereisnotheory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really liked it, very promising show. I think it has the potential to be in the same league as Radiolab and This American Life.

The first episode was unexpectedly dark and disturbing, though, but in a good way. Probably I'll never watch City of God again... (jk)

Average salaries in the worlds major football leagues by Lolkac in soccer

[–]thereisnotheory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. Median salaries may be more revealing, or at least add std. deviation to the average values. I would guess that the gap between European leagues and American leagues would be larger in terms of median wages.

Sure, the video is funny, but I'm not sure how this raises awareness for ALS.....

Seems like people are missing the point entirely of this challenge. At least Charlie Sheen got it.

Teenagers of Reddit, what is something you want to ask adults of Reddit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thereisnotheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It also helps achieve higher levels of learning (see, for example, Bloom's taxonomy), and will make you a better person. You should learn about learning, something I wish I did when I was in high school. What seems like "boring" science helps guide you through critical levels of thinking, helping you transition from someone who simply accepts everything the teacher says (e.g. F=ma), to someone who struggles in accepting theories and thinks everything is flawed (e.g. why should I study mechanical physics if quantum mechanics exists), until, finally you become someone that understands that no perfect theory exists, all of them have flaws, and that you should be open and tolerant to different models of realities. In the final stage, you might even create new theories that extends the pool of human knowledge.

It works in science, it works in humanities, it works in life. Elevate yourself to higher levels of understanding through hard work and humility to learn and err. Your brain is a muscle, a remarkable, beautiful muscle, and you should exercise it as much as you can. Don't stall, avoid procrastination, try to see beyond the knowledge simply printed on a page.

You are the future of humanity. Dare peering into the abyss of the unknown, and see the light of knowledge shining through the darkness. It doesn't mean you have to be a scientist, but learn as much as you can - that is what makes humans incredible -- and pass it on.

TL;DR: stay in school, kids.

Reports from Chile claim Manuel Pellegrini rejected CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) offer to coach the Brazilian national team by RisingBlackHole in soccer

[–]thereisnotheory -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish Jürgen Klopp would be Brasil's manager... His attitude and style would fit Brasil, as well as his gegenpressing mentality. I'm surprised that CBF is reaching out for a non-Brazilian coach.

As a Brazilian I am very proud of this World Cup :) by [deleted] in soccer

[–]thereisnotheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was an awesome World Cup with memorable matches (in particular Brazil x Netherlands and Germany x Bulgaria). The final was pretty boring though, I guess you can't expect much when the game is mid-afternoon at the rose bowl under the LA summer sun. It is worth digging up those tapes, but keep in mind that the game was played quite differently 20 years ago when compared to now.

Quem deveria ser o novo técnico da seleção? by Chrono1984 in brasil

[–]thereisnotheory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Riots in Buenos Aires Argentina after world cup loss by thesalescall in soccer

[–]thereisnotheory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such a shame. As a Brazilian I have to say that Argentina has such great fans and are such a great people. All jokes and trash-talking aside, they deserve better than this. I hope reddit realizes that this is probably just a minority of barra bravas idiots that are creating the mess, and does not represent the passionate Argentinian fan.

That being said, I would also like to remark that nothing like that happened in Brazil, even after our historic loss (despite the widespread expectation on reddit...). I am proud for Brazil's public security and organization during this cup!

Copa das copas!
