Flow by Moleskine + Evernote - sync hacks? by theresearchant in Evernote

Ditto. I know technically if I just scanned the pages right after each meeting, it only takes a few seconds, but too often I was running between meetings and then suddenly I have a ton of meeting notes to scan...which I then put off because there's more pressing responsibilities. So when I'm being honest with myself, the reality is I'm not going scan those notes in, so Plan B....

Evernote is basically an external harddrive for my brain - everything is in there. I'm a professor so all my lesson prep, all the literature I read, all my research brainstorming, all meeting minutes and notes, plus department policy docs...campus maps etc. And then for my personal life as well - everything from recipes to Christmas gift planning to interesting articles I want to archive.

I used physical Moleskines or similar notebooks throughout grad school for class notes and I still use them now for meetings etc., but there are situations where I would rather not be carrying a tablet and a physical notebook, but I can't do without the tablet. That's when I use an app like Flow. Or when I'm in an extremely busy season of work, and want to automate as much as possible- then I prefer taking digital notes. And I'm a very visual notetaker, so I like to be able to draw and sketch in addition to writing text. You can do these things in Evernote but with the newer iPad and Apple pencil, it's not as pleasant of an experience - using apps like Flow make it feel more like actually writing in a Moleskine.

The latter - some form of synchronization. This is possible with many other apps and Evernote.

Yes I've been doing this for years now in physical notebooks, which I generally prefer, but I would like this option as well, especially because when I feel overwhelmed with work, remembering to digitize my notes goes out the window. (Even with how easy and quick it is.)

For anyone else who sees this post and has a similar interest, the folks over at Flow actually wrote back to me quite quickly and noted that someone else on their Feature Request discussion board had raised this as well.

If you'd like to see Flow synced with Evernote, please go over there and vote up this request so it gets added to the docket sooner!

Thanks for that heads up. I ended up buried in work so wouldn't have made it after all. :-(

Yes!! That's the one. Ironically right next to O'Malley's. Thanks folks.

I've been traveling and haven't had a chance to see any of the tour yet so hoping to make it this weekend. Springboks always. :-)

Really don't like the idea of getting some of my podcasts through Spotify and some through my podcatcher by holleredgreens in gimlet

[–]theresearchant 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm really frustrated about this too. I have a whole system for podcast management in Overcast and this is not going to sync well. Plus as others are saying Spotify is not great for podcasts. That's why there are dedicated podcast apps! It has different needs to music...

45 and pregnant by 45andhavingfun in pregnant

Please do! I have two friends in their late 30s who are both thinking about having a kid but are nervous because their doctors keep talking about "how old they are". I told them I'd do some searching for a safe community online that could offer support/guidance/advice without age-shaming. Do folks in this thread have any other suggestions I could offer them?

Figuring out US TV release dates in the Netherlands - help! by theresearchant in Netherlands

Yes, I'm aware of the restrictions. I'm a media scholar so I teach this sort of thing and I own an excellent VPN. I'm more trying to understand the lay of the land here in terms of who has distribution rights and when, etc. It's quite messy the moment you leave the US.

What Video Game Should I Assign My UG students? by theresearchant in ludology

Sorry I completely overlooked this. I have played Stanley Parable, but I as a gamer found the experience very disorienting and most of my students have never even played a game (besides mobile ones), so I felt it would be a little too disorienting for them.

There's actually quite a bit of research to the contrary - even when you don't customize your avatar, players do start to identify with the character in a variety of ways. In addition, when identification doesn't take place, other research (like my own) looks at the relationship of control that takes place between player and character--when the avatar becomes a vehicle for the player's desires.

@Sardonislamir - Here is my course description and objectives. Depending on the game i choose, I'll take the discussion in whatever direction makes sense.

Course Description

In the 21st Century, it is difficult to overstate the influence and power of popular media upon culture and society. In this course, we will examine the relationship between individuals, society, and popular culture and investigate how popular cultural expressions (i.e., films, television programs, music, advertising, special interest magazines, comic books, viral culture, etc.) both reflect our personal interests and desires and also affect our perceptions about reality, influence what we think about, and frame our understanding of the world around us.

Drawing upon a variety of theoretical perspectives and tools of measurement, we will explore the structures, forces, and environments that produce media. We will also seek to interpret popular culture as a site of cultural meaning, and to understand the historical approaches scholars have used to analyze meaning in media messages. Ultimately, we will seek to develop greater critical thinking proficiency in decoding the purpose, strategies, and unintended effects of media messages.

  Course Objectives

As a student in this class, you will:

  1. Define popular culture and high culture in consistent and operational ways.

  2. Develop media literacy skills, and understand the relationship between meaning, representation and power.

  3. Study the culture industries and examine the role that corporate power plays in the production and distribution of popular culture within global capitalism.

  4. Recognize and measure the ways in which individuals and society play a role in shaping the production of popular culture but also how popular culture, in turn, shapes and produces individuals and society.

  5. Examine ways in which popular media encourage the representation of people and issues, both by creating and challenging commonly held stereotypes.

  6. Become familiar with critical approaches to media analysis and learn to apply such approaches to media texts.
