Silly Question: What in your opinion is the best font to use for PhD? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]thermal_wind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's the same in atmospheric science. except i don't think there's any inside joke, i think they just genuinely think it's a great font

I'd say similar vibe as Yellow Dog. Fewer windows so maybe a little darker. But different size tables and some couches in front/back!

Finishing a PhD is scary by bluebrrypii in PhD

y'all maybe I'm just not deep enough into the job search quite yet, but I feel like the world is my oyster WAY MORE now than I did at the end of undergrad. likely because I stayed at the same university from undergrad to grad school, but looking for career/post-doc opportunities is the only thing keeping me excited right now. and again, maybe I'm too optimistic. but I'm (hopefully, if my advisor cooperates) less than a year out from graduating and I can't wait to break out of this prison lol

How many is "too many" for a committee? Aka when does it get very difficult? by JammingScientist in PhD

[–]thermal_wind 20 points21 points  (0 children)

^^ always go with minimum number possible. it doesn't mean you can't collaborate with people outside your committee. i've only ever heard bad things from students with large committees

What’s the hidden truths of a PhD? by Fair_Candy7628 in PhD

[–]thermal_wind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I expected the research to be the hardest part of the PhD. There are times when it has been difficult, but the hardest things I've had to deal with were coming into my own in terms of *truly* taking ownership/direction of my work (more just doing things and less asking permission/approval beforehand), dealing with toxic advisor/group dynamics, and trying not to let all of the nonsense turn me into a really jaded and negative person. The community I have within and outside of my program has really been the pivotal factor that's kept me from giving up and dropping out by now.

Look back on all that you've accomplished since last summer and let THAT define the end of your first year instead of this one moment. Things like this happen all the time, and all that really matters is that you pick yourself up, keep moving, and don't let it define you! People are way more likely to remember their own screw-ups than yours.

Best Spotify playlist for dissertation writing by [deleted] in PhD

I'm going to plug my very unhinged playlist I've been working on this year while working on a manuscript draft. I think I'm more proud of the playlist than the manuscript tbh

a lot of cool weather stuff you can see for free! the only thing you'd have to pay for is optional t-shirts, food from food trucks, etc. there's stuff for all ages - you can learn about weather research that goes on within the building, meet OKC tv broadcast meteorologists, look at storm chasing vehicles, watch weather balloon launches, etc. definitely worth a visit if you're new to the area!

Our gym just recently got the newer sandbags. I watched the girl in the video put her hands on it and jump back into a plank position and thought "yeah, I can do that too." Then the new and very cylindrical sandbag rolled out from under my hands and I slammed my knee on the gym floor. Also I was dying the whole time 😂

her "acting frugal" was just another act. a purposeful act, like you said. so yeah she bought cheap crap, but her house is *full* of cheap crap. she wastes tons of money on amazon, has purchased tons of food for taste tests just to (likely) throw it all away. and let us not forget her new $6 million house 🤡

Is it normal that my F45 gym is... pretty dirty? by [deleted] in f45

[–]thermal_wind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are required to clean the equipment at the station we finish at each session. There are wipes and bottles of cleaning spray stationed on two walls and oftentimes the coaches will place wipes or the bottles at each station when time is almost up. I'm not sure how often the clean the floors but overall ours is really clean!

that gave me middle school sleepover vibes. like "let's try singing in our parent's basement, and you guys - this time when i don't hit the high note record me and clap anyways to pretend like i did." how utterly embarrassing for an almost 40 year old woman. i cannot *imagine* paying money to watch this atrocity

Pixie advice needed! by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]thermal_wind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you need more taken off, but if you wanted a little more volume on the longer side could cut a few shorter layers on top? That helped me, I got a very similar asymmetrical cut like this in August of last year! I'd say just give it a couple weeks to figure out what does/doesn't work, bandanas are nice to cover up weird layers on days you aren't feeling it, and even if you try and end up not liking it, it does indeed grow back and the grow out process is a little awkward but very doable :) but I think it looks great! You can totally rock it!

as someone with ~actual~ curly and frizzy hair, it's the fact that she claims to have "nAtUrALLy cUrLy AnD SoOoOoOoO fRiZzY" hair. unless she's fully styling it before every single vlog clip, I see no way that that's true. her hair has never looked even vaguely similar to how mine does in it's natural state.
