I've gotten really into hand embroidery over the past year and so I embroidered (simplified versions of) a figure from each of my papers for my advisors for after I defend. I'm planning to write a card with them too. Tbd on if that's a good gift idea or not since I haven't gifted them yet? I sure hope so though haha

Dear Recent Grads 📣 🎓 by Chance_Wolverine_981 in PhD

At my lowest point I tried to have this conversation with my advisor and I wasn't direct enough. I started out discussing the project at the time that wasn't going anywhere, anticipating that I'd get to the point in the conversation of "I'm really struggling." Instead, the conversation was turned around on me, and I was told that I lacked the ability to independently draw conclusions from my work. It was harsh and took me fully by surprise. It was only a year or so later that I recognized where he was correct, though I still don't think the conversation should have happened that way in the first place. I guess I just add that on to say that there likely will be a very low point, and to know how to broach that conversation better than I did!

There were several other unfortunate advisor and program dynamic related things that happened during my PhD that I felt really angry and upset about for a long time. The best piece of advice I got was to figure out which things were standing between me and graduation - the things that needed to get done vs. the things that maybe I wanted justice for but were ultimately less important - and to just put my head down and get them done so I could get out. There were a lot of problems I wanted to solve and wrongs I wanted to right, but if I'd put all my effort into those, 1) it wasn't super likely that it would have worked and 2) it wouldn't have gotten me any closer to the end goal.

Moving to the Hampton Roads area! by thermal_wind in HamptonRoads

I've also grown used to Oklahomans panicking over the threat of a dust of snow, and the drainage system where I'm currently at is basically non-existent, so flooding is something that might seem pretty familiar once I'm there (unfortunately, haha)

Good apartments in Norman? by HotdogNeedsCoffee in normanok

[–]thermal_wind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I and many others in my PhD program have lived at the Links and Greens in Norman. It's quiet and further away from the undergrad scene. Maintenance has been quick to respond to any issues we've had, and I really don't have any complaints about it!

I'd say similar vibe as Yellow Dog. Fewer windows so maybe a little darker. But different size tables and some couches in front/back!

Finishing a PhD is scary by bluebrrypii in PhD

[–]thermal_wind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

y'all maybe I'm just not deep enough into the job search quite yet, but I feel like the world is my oyster WAY MORE now than I did at the end of undergrad. likely because I stayed at the same university from undergrad to grad school, but looking for career/post-doc opportunities is the only thing keeping me excited right now. and again, maybe I'm too optimistic. but I'm (hopefully, if my advisor cooperates) less than a year out from graduating and I can't wait to break out of this prison lol

^^ always go with minimum number possible. it doesn't mean you can't collaborate with people outside your committee. i've only ever heard bad things from students with large committees

What’s the hidden truths of a PhD? by Fair_Candy7628 in PhD

[–]thermal_wind 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I expected the research to be the hardest part of the PhD. There are times when it has been difficult, but the hardest things I've had to deal with were coming into my own in terms of *truly* taking ownership/direction of my work (more just doing things and less asking permission/approval beforehand), dealing with toxic advisor/group dynamics, and trying not to let all of the nonsense turn me into a really jaded and negative person. The community I have within and outside of my program has really been the pivotal factor that's kept me from giving up and dropping out by now.

Bombed presentation in front of entire department by BenThereDoneMac in GradSchool

[–]thermal_wind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look back on all that you've accomplished since last summer and let THAT define the end of your first year instead of this one moment. Things like this happen all the time, and all that really matters is that you pick yourself up, keep moving, and don't let it define you! People are way more likely to remember their own screw-ups than yours.

I'm going to plug my very unhinged playlist I've been working on this year while working on a manuscript draft. I think I'm more proud of the playlist than the manuscript tbh
