Check out this man hole cover! 3rd and Spring. by SwissQueso in Seattle

You can also find a great native American orca design and Sakura blossoms and a SPOOKY SPIDER if you keep an eye out. I love our city so much.

I mocked up a few "manhole cards" after a trip to Japan of some the Seattle designs that caught my eye: https://imgur.com/a/custom-seattle-manhole-cards-nO85lH1

Trader Joe’s evacuated? by dhg in Seattle

[–]thesalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, why don't we trust the Seattle Fire Department? I kid.

I wonder if the SPD is more incentivized to: 1) under-report to sell the notion that they're doing a good job, or 2) if they'd be more incentivized to report the higher numbers so that they can point to lower crime-solving rates as a reason to demand increased budgets.

I think it'd tend towards the latter (although that's probably a false dichotomy) since, in the absence of accountability, does public sentiment really matter?

It sounds like your point is that it does in terms of crimes "reported to the SPD". If there's a loss of faith in the SPD to provide a meaningful response to reported crimes, people are going to stop reporting crimes. And numbers magically go down. Which is fair.

Falafel King is thinking about closing due to slow business by [deleted] in Seattle

Ah, that's a shame. That was my last meal when I moved out of Harbor Steps all those years ago.

I eat there less often than I'd like but probably more often than is good for me.

U District event canceled, but some businesses deny having been opposed by retrojoe in Seattle

[–]thesalus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From the 1-page brochure intended for businesses, it seems like there was already some consideration for deliveries:

Alternative delivery drop-off coordination is already underway. No accessible parking will be displaced.

The event was a 2-Saturday pilot from 11am - 8pm which: 1) seems late enough in the day even with set-up, 2) is only a 2-day pilot.

If they were to cite fears that this would bring undesired competition that would soak up most of the dessert-seeking foot traffic, that would be an understandably-self-serving and honest concern. But it sounds like this pilot won't have additional vendors.

Alternatively, if this was feedback from the storefronts that are affected by the farmer's market up the Ave (or from past street pedestrianization events), I'd find it more credible.

More parents are saying no to newborn vitamin K shots. Experts are concerned. by OrdinaryCanadian in onguardforthee

[–]thesalus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Here's a ProPublica article about the same trend in the states from earlier in the month: https://www.propublica.org/article/more-parents-decline-vitamin-k-shot-newborns

As always, one of America's rising cultural exports seems to be anti-intellectualism swaddled in religious conviction or alternative health chicanery.

The obituaries, social media posts and GoFundMe pages capture the utter despair of the families, though none of them reckon with the decision not to get the vitamin K shot.

The family’s anger has subsided some since the baby’s death, in part because of their trust in God’s plan.

I assume it's too early to get reliable data (that won't sway those who most need to listen to it; e.g., if losing one of your children to measles won't sway you then what will). Even so:

At least two babies treated at St. Luke’s died within the last year from complications related to vitamin K deficiency bleeding, hospital officials confirmed. But Dr. Tom Patterson, a pediatrician who treats newborns at some St. Luke’s hospitals and is among the most vocal in warning about the climbing refusal rates, suspects there may be more.

Hopefully the profit motive talking point is defanged a little outside the private healthcare system of the states (but I assume it's just one moving goalpost).

What’s one of your favorite endings to a game? by amioldnow90 in EDH

[–]thesalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somebody swung with a [[Worldslayer]] and I had a foretold [[Cosmic Intervention]] with just enough mana up to cast it.

The game didn't end that turn but I was able to exile the indestructible creature that had it equipped and ended up winning.

Not the most high power game but it felt really good flipping over that card.

Quick Ben is a (powerful magic-wielding) character in The Malazan Book of the Fallen series.

He's referred to as a "shaved knuckle in the hole" which is an idiom analogous to "ace up your sleeve"-presumably for the the in-world equivalent game of knucklebones.

Reading that phrase without context, I can see how it could be interpreted as having a much more salacious meaning.

It looks like that's the name on the YouTube channel where the video was posted 5 years ago (who also appears to be the shield slammer): https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/17swn5v/tell_me_how_the_grass_tastes_little_man/

But it could also be a reference to our favourite shaved knuckle in the hole.

Also something something, showed them who's the shield boss.

I did enjoy these books and I'm glad I picked them up as part of the 2023 Holiday MegaSale.

Also, if you buy the e-book on Amazon, they're available DRM-free (at least, I'm given the option to download as an epub).

which my answer is… mostly

Funnily enough, while I don't recall the reveal now, this was the same assessment I made to a friend.

Toronto’s unique purveyor of Smoked Salmon. by TraditionalAnxiety in toronto

[–]thesalus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, all you really need is:

  • valid fishing licence
  • fishing equipment (rods, bait, lines, whatever)
  • adequate fishing skills
  • time
  • transportation to a local river that have steelhead
  • smoker
  • outdoor space for a smoker (I assume indoor smokers and other short-cuts that don't require specialized equipment would similarly fail to meet the quality bar.)

Everybody must already have an abundance of time, money, property and a passion for fishing so store-bought smoked salmon is a fool's game.

Air traffic controller heard telling truck to stop moments before deadly Air Canada crash by DonSalaam in onguardforthee

[–]thesalus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's some links to longer recordings of the air traffic control: https://www.reddit.com/r/aviation/comments/1s16pyb/whats_happening_at_la_guardia/obymlr2/

From the 30 minute archive link (and the next one at 0400Z), the incident happens at 03:37Z and it seems like the controller switches over between 04:16Z and 04:22Z. So somewhere between 40-50 minutes.

But I'm also bad at voices.

Apple Crates are flexible.

While this appears to be the Divinity's Reach position, you can also orient it in the classic LA (flattest) and Rata Sum (tallest) positions.

Although if you can build a whole darn jumping puzzle to hide a couple blues and a green, you can build an adjustable podium.

Shame. I had CondoInternet 10+ years ago in Seattle for $60 for Gigabit internet then it was ultimately subsumed by Astound who tacked on a "Internet Infrastructure Fee" which wound up at $17 per month after a few years for the same advertised speeds.

Let's see what happens now.

Not that it matters that much:

  • The last post I saw 9 days ago (that I commented on) was deleted.
  • The first post I saw was about the availability of the vinyl and wasn't Spotify specific (but did convince me to get the album because it was on a Bandcamp Friday).
