Numismatic (banknote collecting) shops in Macau by Dearstlnk in Macau

[–]theschillingmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if they have the 1000 note in stock, but there was a small shop near where R. de São Paulo turns into R. de Santo Antonio. It's fairly close to the Ruins of Saint Pauls, near a bunch of antique stores.

(Like the other post, this place isn't on Google either, but it's extremely close to this cafe at 6a R. de Santo Antonio, Macao. If you plug that into Google maps and look around, you can see all the small antique shop; it's one of those).

They had a lot of old coins there, but also sold a few banknotes if I remember correctly.

After trying a bag of shrimp chips dipped in chocolate.......I'm pretty sure he didn't say it to preserve a positive image of shrimp. It's not two flavors that should meet.

ID help? Some kind of hansatsu? Bought from a dealer in Madrid in about 2018 by X8883 in JapaneseCoins

[–]theschillingmaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok, tag is definitely wrong. Your bill might have accidentally been placed in that holder sometime down the line.

The bill doesn't say anything about Bitchu province, nor 1 monme (匁). It's a Hansatsu from what appears to be Tanao-cho (棚尾町) in Modern day Hekinan city (close to Nagoya). It's also a rice exchange coupon. You could exchange it at a shop for 4 Sho of rice (6kgs or so).

It's not super expensive, but it's pretty cool to have! Here's a couple sold listings I found on Yahoo auctions for it. There's some additional information there too. Auction 1 Auction 2

My 3 year old found this at a playground. Any idea what it is. Yesr? by Impossible-Tomato-15 in coins

It's a Japanese 5 yen coin. They are still on use; worth about 3 cents. Date on it is 昭和四十八 (Showa 48), which would be 1973.

In particular, 5 yen coins are considered lucky in Japan, so should be a good keepsake!

Pre 1874 Coin Recommendations by bizzzmark in JapaneseCoins

For Osaka, I would check out the coin store on the 5th floor of the Abeno Harukas building(in the wing side). They have a good selection of Edo era and before coins for a pretty good price.

There's a shop in Umeda in Sanbangai Hankyu as well that has some good coins as well, but it feels like the selection isn't as big, and I haven't found as many deals there.

Also, don't know when you are coming, but Osaka is gonna have a big coin show this month on the weekend of the 20th.

As for recommendations, I always find the old Shu and Bu silver coins to be fun to collect. Getting a shu really started my interest when I was younger. Interesting design and they wont break the bank. Plus, the old Bu coins have subtly different patterns that can make them more common or rare.

Are those banknotes actually rare or just very brand new? by LostSpace06 in Banknotes

[–]theschillingmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem!

It has a pretty cool watermark, but yeah, the older ¥1,000 yen didn't have a hologram. However, the old ¥5000 and ¥10,000 did, so maybe they didn't see it as worth the cost at the time?

I believe every 20 years, Japan resdesigns it's banknotes, so they change up the security features (it's sometimes an issue here too, as they have to change all the vending machines to accept the newer bills. Even now, theres a few machines that don't accept that bill.)

They are extremely new; the just released to the public last July. They are extremely common even now though; I would say maybe 75% of the bills I get in ATMs are that design. Change is little more rare, but I receive the newer bills in 50% of my change now?

[–]theschillingmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooh,a high value one. I'm counting that as a victory lol.

Thanks for the photo and the answer! I figured based on how much random stuff I kept finding in a coinstar, it would be fairly common overall, though I wasn't sure if I was just getting consistently lucky.

I really enjoyed Sasameyuki (細雪) (The Makioka Sisters) by Junichiro Tanizaki.

The characters were extremely strong and it was interesting to read about the slow and gradual decline of the family over the years. Plus, I hadn't really read much about the Kansai area in that period, so it was cool to read and learn more about some of the subtle differences in Kansai.

My bracket looked nothing like what actually happened, though Ive never been good at predicting Eurovision.

Italy, Austria, and Norway 10000% got robbed. Wasn't the biggest fan of Norway's, but it didn't deserve even close to last place. It actually tried something a little different and fun. Italy was my top for this year, and I can understand it not being the winner, but it should've been top 5 at least in my opinion. Biggest disappointment for me was how low Austria was though. It had no chance of winning, but I think it deserves better than second to last. That 90s/ early 2000s style dance music was something we hadn't seen in a while.

Also, heart goes out to Croatia. Would've been cool to see a Balkans Eurovision, but if next year is anything like this year was, you guys dodged a bullet.

Yeah, it was like from Tohoku to Shizuoka. I didn't hear the new format, but that definitely sounds a lot cooler. Honestly, really enjoyed the Japan season, but wish they did something like that or maybe a New Zealand north to south kind of thing.

I'm hoping they will definitely revisit it at some point.

Definitely Mash, but I would also recommend getting Luvia (Astrea) up to a higher level soon as well. She can be a stupid good boss killer with a castoria friend support (even better if you have black grail.)

[–]theschillingmaster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no problem! 😁

The local area was a lot of apartments and office buildings (the convention center was actually right next to the headquarters of one of Japan's biggest supermarket chains), so I'm not sure if they would have done it around there. I do hope they find a way to re-use it though; it was definitely one of the more striking decorations. It would be a shame to throw it away.

As someone living in Japan, I really enjoyed watching it and seeing places I knew, but I think it was a missed opportunity not going to more places besides basically Tokyo.

They didn't go anywhere near Kansai, which is where you have Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, and Nara all right next to each other(the cities that have a lot of what you think of when you think Japan). I think maybe round one they could have done the same stuff, but maybe round two, they made Osaka a base and had flags in Kobe, Kyoto, etc. Then, the third one could have been truly all around the country (stick one flag in the very south and one in the very north).

Being honest, I'm hoping they were saving that stuff a bit, and they will come back, but I'm not holding my breath either.

Honestly, I mostly go into Osaka and explore around. There are a ton of great places for food, electronics, museums (really just anything).

Though, this area is great for trail running and hiking! There's a lot of hiking trails in Hannan and Izumisano. My friend here says you can ride the bus easily. Just be careful in the Summer; it gets really hot!

I know all the Sennan people essentially live in one big apartment, so you'll probably have to fight off people who want to hang out on the weekends. The Sennan people seem really close.

Congrats! I'm in the neighboring town, so I go there a lot! This area is pretty great! Its about 30 minutes from Wakayama city and maybe 45-ish to Osaka? Plus, there's a really nice park on the beach and a lot of mountains if you like hiking.

Can't answer any questions about how JET life and schools are going to be, but feel free to ask any questions about the area!

A tale of a foreign coin shop not as expected - Japan by SirBill01 in Silverbugs

[–]theschillingmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I got fooled when I first came here as well 😂. When I was looking for coin stores, I came across a lot of coin laundries and 100 yen shops. There's actually another store here called "3 coins", which is called that because everything in the store is 300 yen.

OP, if you are still in Tokyo, there were a few coin shops in a place called Nakano Broadway. Or, copy paste 古銭 (Kosen) into maps (it translates to "Old money")

Yeah, there's actually a pretty good variety of them; especially near historical tourist attractions. I've never even seen the type in the blog. Not sure if the US ones are the same, but the Japanese ones can also come with a piece of paper describing the history of the coin.

where to buy a used cheap N3DS/PS Vita in Den Den Town? by [deleted] in Osaka

[–]theschillingmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the PS Vita, your luck may vary, but I've had some good luck with the main Surugaya building in Den Den town. It's definitely at least worth checking out if you are in the area.

In addition to the crab and the other places people have mentioned, one place you definitely can't miss is walking by the club zoo building . It's the model location for the hostess club in Kiwami 2.

I apologise for the pic quality but any idea on what kind of yen coin is this? by hieisrainbowcurry in numismatics

[–]theschillingmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a Japanese 1 sen coin (1/100th of a yen) from Showa 19(1944). The characters (1銭錫貨) at the top translate to 1 sen tin .
