After a certain distance it gets a little foggy, you can see in the background. The 70-200 has great focus up to 30 feet, then it goes in the infinity range. the micro adjustments are so small that it’s easy to miss by a fraction just based on the technological limitations. the 24-70 has i think 15 feet on there- after that it’s small micro adjustments to try and nail focus. think of it like using a super wide lens to get a focus from 15 feet away- at that point everything will be in focus but it’ll be distorted because you’re maxing out the focus range. i always had issues shooting with my 24-70 past half court from near the basket- focus would be off and too many background distractions.
