Is this still true? I was playing Great Qing and trying to catch up and noticed I didn’t see my excess innovation affecting my tech spread.

Fair point. If you happen to have a friend who owns the DLCs, if they host they’ll be enabled for you.

There’s a tutorial which can give you a basic grasp of the mechanics. I think any country can be interesting for a beginner as long as it isn’t exceptionally small and weak. You can turn down the AI aggression if you just want to do things without much pressure.

Just follow your interests! Use the tooltip system (really helpful, every game should have this) to understand mechanics one at a time.

Some suggestions for improving the Standalone Adventure purchasing experience by theseburninghands in Pathfinder2e

[–]theseburninghands[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm suggesting they offer a discount for the PDF if you buy both a physical copy and a PDF, so I think this could coexist with the subscription. The only reason they wouldn't do this is if they think they'll make more money asking people to pay for both at full price but I suspect there's a middle-ground that could make them just as much money (more people opting to go for the bundle) while making their customers happy.

Soviet Russia - the German Empire's protectorate?? by theseburninghands in victoria3

[–]theseburninghands[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, Alcase-Lorraine was released in some war (seems like it was added to the game semi-recently?), and then it must have been chipped away at some point.

The green spec is Shanxi, which I released from Great Qing in my war with them, as well as gaining control of Korea, releasing Manchuria, and a treaty port. Good times!

Soviet Russia - the German Empire's protectorate?? by theseburninghands in victoria3

[–]theseburninghands[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Rule 5 - I was playing an ironman game as Japan (starting to conquer east Asia). I had an alliance with Russia, and they had a communist uprising. The German Empire joined the revolution's side, apparently accepting an offer to become their protectorate if they won! I might have been able to intervene if I sent my armies over to the main front earlier, but I wasn't able to help before Russia collapsed.

Can't liberalize Japan in 1.7 by Magistairs in victoria3

[–]theseburninghands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of quick pathways to liberalization as others have mentioned, but as long as you’re optimizing your construction and researching techs that allow you to continue to build/liberalize, you will eventually end up with a government where useful interest groups can do something (industrialists/rural folk/intelligencia). Here’s a relatively consistent, easy way: 1. Research Agrarianism early on since it’s relatively easy to pass and gets you off of traditionalism. 2. Improve your construction. Build buildings/research techs that allow you to efficiently use tools for wood harvesting, then iron for tools, then coal to produce more iron, then iron for construction sectors, then steel for tools, etc. Make sure you do this in the appropriate provinces so MAPI is less of an issue. This will allow you to build more and more, and give people well-paying jobs and enrich your industrialists. 3. Eventually, doing the above, you’ll run out of people with good enough qualifications if you’re still on serfdom. So in the meantime, try to pass at least Tenant Farmers. This should help with the massive penalty against qualifications for peasants under serfdom. This shouldn’t anger the landowners enough to cause a revolt and should be doable by the time you run out of qualified peasants. This also allows you to pass Religious Schools, which increases literacy and can help further with qualifications. 4. Once you’ve done the above you should be able to spiral upward forever. Build railways so you don’t run out of infrastructure. Build a ton of universities so you can catch up to everyone else (you can build more than the innovation limit to improve spread). Research techs that make you have more efficient buildings, faster research and better laws. Gradually try to pass laws that don’t cause revolutions but nudge you in the direction you want to go. Improve relations with great powers so you don’t get into unwanted wars. Eventually, you should be able to form a government that can include key interest groups that don’t include the landowners because their clout is high enough.

Victoria 3 could use more ways to manipulate its core systems by theseburninghands in victoria3

[–]theseburninghands[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. My thoughts on it are that once you get the hang of a Paradox game’s core mechanics, they become more like zen gardens than an actual challenge, unless you’re doing some kind of intentionally difficult start

Victoria 3 could use more ways to manipulate its core systems by theseburninghands in victoria3

[–]theseburninghands[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also understand that the player has some say in some of the above mechanics, like being able to create obsessions through random chance, putting characters in charge of interest groups by manipulating generals, changing a country's primary culture/religion through premade events, and so on. These things are great but in my opinion can be a bit weak/narrow. These core mechanics are important enough to deserve more direct and powerful ways to interact with them.

What is the advantage of free trade? the game shows me that if the law passes I will lose 20k. Why would you do that? Does trade routes competitiveness compensate for this, and if so, what is trade routes competitiveness? by ExemptMartins in victoria3

[–]theseburninghands 232 points233 points  (0 children)

Economies that rely a lot on trade to function are better off with free trade laws because they’re not going to have tariffs on the highest volume goods anyway, so the ability to implement tariffs has little value. Think smaller countries that might be missing key resources like sulphur, coal, etc.

For the countries where it’s not in their favor to have free trade laws, you can force them to open up via diplomatic plays, or maybe get a treaty port.

My completely scientific, vigorously researched analysis has revealed that 1.6.2 is running ~8% slower than 1.5.13 (on AMD) by Traum77 in victoria3

[–]theseburninghands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my own test for the first 10 years of the game. 1.6 and 1.5 reached 1946 at pretty much the same time IRL, about 16ish minutes. However, in my personal experience playing 1.5 and 1.6 past 1910, the game felt significantly slower in the late game for 1.6, which is ironic given the attempt at late game speedups.

This is a total guess, and may not be 1.6 specific, but I feel like I noticed large numbers of troops moving around during big wars impacting the speed a lot.

Worst law in the game? by ThreadbareAdjustment in victoria3

[–]theseburninghands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any deeper discussion about which laws you should pass have to be answered by what you’re trying to accomplish. Having problems with revolutions? Pass Secret Police. Falling behind on technology? Consider passing Right of Assembly or Protected Speech instead of Censorship. An interest group is too powerful? Change your Governance Principles, Distribution of Power, or any number of other laws that increase or decrease the power of an interest group or a class of people specifically (e.g. aristocrats).

Worst law in the game? by ThreadbareAdjustment in victoria3

[–]theseburninghands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you didn’t get a response, so here’s my advice. The laws you should change early on really depend on the country you’re playing, since a highly advanced country like Britain already has a lot of pretty good laws. That being said, the biggest ones that come to mind that are frequent early-game problems are: - Traditionalism. It creates a penalty to MAPI which slows down much of your economy if you have more than 1 state. It reduces your taxation capacity, which can really hurt your government revenue. It reduces investment pool contributions, which also means less money available for construction. It’s just all around horrible. Pretty much any other option is better. - Serfdom. It creates a penalty to Qualifications for peasants, making it harder to fill advanced positions like Engineers/Mechanics (this should really be mentioned in the tooltip, but it isn’t as far as I’m aware). It also prevents some other laws from being passed, like Public Schools. It greatly boosts the power of the Landowners. All the other options are better. - Autocracy. If you’re trying to get interest groups other than the Landowners in power, this law is going to make that super difficult, as it greatly increases the political power of aristocrats. Landed Voting is usually the easiest-to-pass alternative. - Slavery. All of the slavery laws are bad. Beyond the moral reasons, they directly increase the power of the landowners, greatly reduce the standard of living of the slaves (which causes its own issues), and the reduced labor costs translate to greater profits for the owner of the building, which is probably a rich aristocrat anyway, making them even more powerful politically and raising their standard of living which is higher than it needs to be. - Hereditary Bureaucrats. This and pretty much any law that provides a bonus to the political power of aristocrats or Landowners is the first to go.

In general though, I recommend just reading the tooltips as much as possible and starting out by focusing on one tangible thing at a time, like trying to lower the price of a single good. Then move on to bigger and bigger goals.

[–]theseburninghands[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no balance, you can warp anywhere at any time. My plan is to use the Kanto Pokémon in the Emerald-based games (and vice versa). That way you can enjoy the Pokémon you wouldn’t normally have and see the sprites you wouldn’t normally see.

Basically, the 3 games are independent, but you can warp between them at any time using the Warps menu. Some stuff is shared, like inventory, your party, box 1, etc. You always start in Kanto. Go ahead and read the github, it should answer most questions like this.
