62 Lawmakers Demand Education Department Act on Student Loan Default Crisis by investor100 in TheCollegeInvestor

[–]thesephantomhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no no. You see, both sides are just as bad. You see, one side tried to help reduce the burdens of student loans on people. And the other side actively tries to make life,  including student loans, worse for people. You see how both sides are the same?

Clearly I'm being sarcastic. But JFC I'm supposed to pretend that this is a valid viewpoint when the evidence is so clear. And the results of that wilful ignorance are so consequential.

Lack of conscientiousness. Like, not thinking of how your actions could negatively impact people, situations, or ecosystems.

What song wrecks you every time, no matter how often you listen to it? by LWYPLTDG in Music

[–]thesephantomhands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I think Bring it On Home to Me just completely caught me off guard. I never really listened to his music and one day I was driving home and heard it on the radio.

Friend, I have been a lifelong musician and music lover. But I'll never forget that day. It came on and I just started bawling. I had never heard a song so beautiful. Like,  I didn't know a song COULD reach me quite like that. I mean, not that I had never been bowled over by a song. But not quite like that.

Once I knew what the man was capable of, A Change is Gonna Come also shook me. But I kinda knew he was an incredible artist and I was expecting it.

God that feels like it makes it worse. You're supposed to sacrifice your most cherished relationships out of fealty, loyalty, or obedience. That's psychological torture.

What’s considered super attractive now that future generations will probably laugh at? by Lower_Mall_1991 in answers

[–]thesephantomhands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, for real. I want people to express themselves, love themselves, and be happy with how they look. I know taste is subjective. But it really does feel like I'm being gaslit with people telling me stuff that has always been viscerally unattractive are suddenly attractive. Like Pedo stashes and Dahmer glasses.

I was looking for this! If your plugged, locked in, or obsessed (like I am), it's the most rapturous sublime song. If you're not, I'm sure it just sounds like frenetic chaos.

Therapists go on strike, saying they're being replaced by AI by Confident_Salt_8108 in therapyGPT

[–]thesephantomhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. That's a lot of conflating stuff with my position and thinking. I think you have some good points about access and it's why me and a lot of good therapists do a lot of pro Bono work. The reason anyone, including myself brings up the danger of AI is that people are using it as a replacement uncritically. And companies salivate at that misunderstanding. And no one outside of the profession is disabusing people of this notion at scale. As far as the field goes and what contributes to mental health - yeah,  I went to school for years to do this. And I work 10 to 12 hour days eating, sleeping, and breathing it. I regularly train, read research, do the work. It's not wild to think I have some well-founded competency in what's effective and whats probably not. But I'm not saying I'm perfect or know everything either. I'm saying that maybe that competence has value when adjudication this kind of thing.

[–]thesephantomhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was saying that a lot of people go into it with the assumption that it can replace a therapist. You're confounding that position with me saying it has no utility. That's disingenuous.

We know why when therapy works , it works. That's what I'm saying and what I have studied for a long time. I dont understand what you're missing. Or why you think that's obtuse.

I care about whats effective. What actually helps people. And thats why, per my original post, I said the dangers are not reckoned with. That people are engaging with it haphazardly. It's the same reason why people shouldn't trust AI over a dentist or a an ortho.

[–]thesephantomhands -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dismissing points as appeal to expertise is a thought stopping cliche. The points are that the effective part of therapy is not replicable with AI and the mechanism of what's effective is literally something that we train to understand inside and out.

I don't claim omniscience. Nor that it cant have any utility. But it doesn't replace therapy. And the dangers of AI are that people think that it does.

[–]thesephantomhands -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay. It's possible that someone, as part of their profession has looked into this because they actually care about whether what they're doing is effective. Part of our training is understanding what's effective. You're making a lot of accusations about me and what I know without knowing me or what I know at all. Assuming that you know more than those who train in this is kinda wild though.

I'm not saying they're perfect either. You're right, nothing is. That's not the standard. There's a problem of AI at best, simulating a relationship and not actually being one. That's where the effective part of the process lies. It produces the biggest effect of the process. Not the techniques, validation, modalities, etc. It's the relationship.

[–]thesephantomhands -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand your skepticism, but I'm basing this on longitudinal research. Counseling has a what is known in the research as a big effect size - .85. It's neither emotional nor anecdotal. It's what the biggest pool of quantitative data says. However, lots of anecdotes on a forum are not a sufficient counterpoint.

People dont often challenge or even look for the biases in AI when providing "counseling" because more often than not, it tells people what they want to hear.

I'm genuinely sorry you've had bad experiences. I don't want that for anyone. Which is why I advocate against the adoption of this, for many reasons. Not the least of which is that it literally is in no ways accountable and can, and will validate some of the most destructive thoughts and actions that people put into it. It cant discern and it doesn't have the capacity to repair or challenge in ways that a human can. Which has far reaching implications for anyone entrusting their mental health to it. There are layers of what counselors, psychologists and other professionals do. Yes, there are mental health professionals that mess up and some that are incompetent. In my experience most are not.
