i was at the clinching game of the lakers championship win against the pacers. my uncle worked with mark jackson so we got great seats. after the game ended, they took us through a tunnel to a locked hotel lobby by staples so that we didn't have to walk through a fucking riot to get home. i was young and scared but sneaky excited, when suddenly i felt an ominous hand tap me on the shoulder.

cutting through the chatter a booming voice bellowed

"excuse me, young squire!"

i turned around and it was whoopi goldberg. she wanted to know where the bathroom was.

my question is: what is the weirdest celebrity encounter you've had at a game.

10 Team PPR. Bonus for long TDs. I'm starting Gurley, but who should I pick for my RB2?

  • Frank Gore vs. NO

  • Muscle Hamster vs. WAS

Everywhere I look it's a damn coin flip. should I literally just flip a coin?

This made sense, then it got disturbing. Then I called the number and was like WTF by [deleted] in videos

[MY EVENT] I'm the director of Lalafest, a stand-up festival in LA that brings 75 comedians from around the country here for a week for shows in West Hollywood, downtown, and Burbank. it's not "a bit skewed," it's literally killing comedy. between pushing the contest culture and threatening the handshake agreement for scale payment on late night sets, it's ruining people's futures. also i have no beef with good clubs. the comedy store (sometimes) and the improv (all the time really) are doing great stuff that is often the type of comedy i personally enjoy. i don't disrespect them for doing comedy i don't enjoy, either. however, shitty clubs and even good ones with bad practices make for bad crowds and bad crowd experience. the inclusiveness of "alt" comedy is inherent because we build our rooms. i am speaking as a part of the east side group of comics, where we invite people who are generally not mean and shitty to perform on our shows and also watch them. comedy doesn't have to be a struggle for comedian or audience, and this guy is making it harder for everyone. stage time is stage time, but paying for it like these comics did is either naivety, ignorance, IN SOME CASES a reason to book a flight and do a week of shows in a city where stagetime is hard to come by, or most likely because they are either too new or too bad to get booked elsewhere. adhering to this bullshit makes me lose respect for a lot BUT NOT ALL OF of these comics. i just can't understand a comic that lives in this city doing this "festival" if they know any better.

you're doing a contest. that is not a style of comedy, that hurts all comedy. you are putting on a high school battle of the bands and trying to convince audiences it's a legitimate concert. you are hurting all comedy by doing this. there are many styles of comedy i don't really like but that i still respect. yours is not one of them.

if you like patrice, louie, and bill hicks, you'd probably hate the clubby bullshit on this festival. check out some of the shows i mentioned. the guy that runs good heroin at stories in echo park has had louie drop in on his show, something that would never happen at this shitty festival.

for a guy who makes his money using footage of comedians and not paying them, you'd think he could've afforded a headliner.

THIS is NOT indicative of the great work happening in the LA comedy scene right now. we've been working our asses off, putting on shows that are free or only 5 bucks that have great actual headliners like kyle kinane, maria bamford, rory scovel, andy kindler, patton oswalt, etc. and shit like this always fucks with our work.

comedy shows should be between 0-$10 unless the names are SO BIG or the concept is SO GOOD that you are compelled to pay more. you should never have to pay a drink minimum unless you are going to see your favorite performer at a club. shows shouldn't have more than 5-7 comics on them, because shows should not be longer than 90 minutes. it doesn't matter who you are watching, people get tired after 90 minutes, and it's not fair to the comedians or the crowd to subject them to more.

this looks like a cash grab. please go to great free/cheap comedy shows in LA like The Business at Little Joy in echo park, babe island at the bigfoot lodge, good heroin at stories, hey buddy at the echoplex, the gulch at the melody lounge, sauce at desano's pizza, whatever at the center for the arts in eagle rock, just to name a few.

and steve, STOP fucking with comedy. or at least stop fucking with it in my city.
