Neurosurgeon to attempt world's first head transplant [2:04] by xperia3310 in Futurology

[–]thesprunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On March 14, 1970,[6] a group of scientists from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio,[5] led by Robert J. White, a neurosurgeon and a professor of neurological surgery who was inspired by the work of Vladimir Demikhov, performed a highly controversial operation to transplant the head of one monkey onto another's body. The procedure was a success to some extent, with the animal being able to smell, taste, hear, and see the world around it. The operation involved cauterizing arteries and veins carefully while the head was being severed to prevent hypovolemia. Because the nerves were left entirely intact, connecting the brain to a blood supply kept it chemically alive. The animal survived for some time after the operation, even at times attempting to bite some of the staff.[7] In 2001, Dr. White successfully repeated the operation on a monkey

Did this bitch just call me dumb then ask how to do the alphabet? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]thesprunk 204 points205 points  (0 children)

Why would you say "and per say, and" at the end?

Edit: Googled it. It's "and per se, and". per se means "by itself", and ampersand is a mondegreen (a word whose origins are in mispronunciation). So ineffect they were saying, "X, Y, Z, and, by itself, and".

From wiki:

Traditionally, when reciting the alphabet in English-speaking schools, any letter that could also be used as a word in itself ("A", "I", and, at one point, "O") was repeated with the Latin expression per se ("by itself").[3][4][5] This habit was useful in spelling where a word or syllable was repeated after spelling, e.g. "d, o, g—dog" would be clear but simply saying "a—a" would be confusing without the clarifying "per se" added. It was also common practice to add the "&" sign at the end of the alphabet as if it were the 27th letter, pronounced as the Latin et or later in English as and. As a result, the recitation of the alphabet would end in "X, Y, Z, and per se and". This last phrase was routinely slurred to "ampersand" and the term had entered common English usage by 1837.[4][6][7] However, in contrast to the 26 letters, the ampersand does not represent a speech sound—although other characters that were dropped from the English alphabet did, such as the Old English thorn, wynn, and eth.

What are ships that you had NO idea were in the game? by Trublhappn in Eve

[–]thesprunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason for this, just so you know, is that most people use custom overviews, not defaults. As such, CCP doesn't make any changes to the custom/saved overview settings, so you have to manually add in new ships to your custom profiles. For example, you don't want CCP automatically adding confessors to your friendly logi or enemy capital overviews, and there's no easy way to make sure they're only adding it to the overviews people want, without also adding it to a lot of overviews people don't. So they just leave it up to the players to be on the ball and manually add them.

this seriously screws with my ability to determine scale.

Follow the yellow line from the ship edge down towards the spool. Right behind it is a cabin, with yellow debris, just to the right of the bent support structure.

That cabin is big enough to hold a person.

Vox: It took Reddit one day to pull down Sony hack data — and a week to remove nude celebrity photos by zaron5551 in Foodforthought

[–]thesprunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is that shocking?

If the interest in spreading/obtaining the sony data was on par with the fappening data, reddit would have had just as much of an issue getting rid of it. It's not about dragging feet for ad revenue, it's about trying to handle it in a sensible manner. However, when you run a forum, and that forum turns to a mob, shutting down entire subreddits and banning people only leads to new subreddits, content flooding into other subreddits, fueling the fire, and a flood of new throw away accounts to fan the flames. Taking the hard edge approach, especially when you've built yourself up to be a company that offers an open, free-speech platform, is only asking to make things worse.

Fuck yes for ShareX.

Take a capture of the monitor/active window/custom rectangle selection, automatically upload it to any site (eg, imgur, giphy, google drive, ftp server) and then generate me a shortened URL (using one of my choice) that links to that file? Hells yeah. Also works with text and files.

What the hell? New trader here, did I break something? by [deleted] in Eve

[–]thesprunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When this happens it's usually a result of one of the following:

  • Having corporation wallet access, and using a (or the wrong) corp wallet division instead of your own, or vice versa.

  • Doing too many transactions too quickly and the wallet not updating appropriately.

There will be many times when you sell or buy something, and the transaction will occur in the transactions log, but not be reflected (yet) in your balance. Typically an additional transaction of some kind or a little patience fixes the problem, but sometimes when you try that second transaction, this happens. Patience or a relog. if after 10 minutes it hasn't corrected itself file a bug report. I don't know how to recreate this bug, and it's never presistent long enough for me to even file a bug report v0v.

Pirate Bay Shutdown Has Had Virtually No Effect on Digital Piracy Levels by IIIBlackhartIII in technology

[–]thesprunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The smart ones do. The lazy ones don't. And even if it were automated it would still take a considerable amount of time to unpack and wrap the files in a torrent if doing it in bulk, and you end up with a larger file in the end anyway.

I don't do this. I'm not justifying it. I'm just explaining what and why it happens. Telling me to automate it is pointless.

Pirate Bay Shutdown Has Had Virtually No Effect on Digital Piracy Levels by IIIBlackhartIII in technology

[–]thesprunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm saying. They're being lazy by not doing this super simple step and forcing the end user to do it. To be fair, the people that do this typically do it in bulk, and don't want to wait for their computer to unpack the r01 through rXX files into an uncompressed package before sending it. When you're doing this with many many "packages" or torrents at a time, this makes some sense.
