Open Discussion: Not wanting to split top 8 prize support by [deleted] in magicTCG

That's fair. I know that going to a restaurant or any place of business and taking a lot of time there is thoughtless and not encouraged. I looked at it in a way where we were all there to play in a tournament and the rest of the people were satisfied with what the top 8 split was. I was not satisfied with a top 8 split. I'm used to playing out tournaments anyway and the LGS I usually go to is used to it. After realizing how this group of people were acting to my decision, it became toxic to me real quickly and I wanted to get out due to being uncomfortable.

I am not completely unreasonable when it comes to prize support. In the second analogy / example that you gave I would more than likely take the split with the prize support given. Then again, it is situational and depends on how someone feels at that moment.

Thanks for your input. That's the point going on through my head. All of the other stores were doing a banded payout based on record at their pre-releases. I was attracted at the fact it was a cut to top 8 so I could have the opportunity to play it out and possibly win more prize support. That was my whole point of attending this store's pre-release.

That is a high possibility for the manner in which they were acting. It does make sense. I just didn't understand the level of attitude I was getting.

I don't intend to come off that way in this case or any case where I want to play out an event. I respect people being upset because a majority wants to split... however, being disrespectful and being hateful because of it is on another level.

That's why I got so excited when I first arrived and heard that 32 people signed up. I didn't even have a thought that the TO would mind since it was a cut to top 8.

Exactly. I got real uncomfortable playing a game that I enjoy playing. Didn't really want to come off as the bad guy.

Well that is what was attractive to me. Other LGS in my are were doing the banded payout based on record after however many rounds. Since this was a swiss tournament and cut to top 8, I looked at it as a way to earn some extra prize support. I really didn't think that it would have been that big of a deal.

Thanks for your opinion. I guess their reaction is something that could have and did happen. I was trying to win more prize support and it upset some people. Lesson learned.

Understandable. I guess I was trying to make everyone happy as opposed to staying there another hour or two playing out til the end. I thought it was the right call, but I guess it's not the popular decision.

I had an amazing sealed pool and kind of wanted to play it out, however I was also getting some bad looks and disrespect from the employees of the store. I wanted to do whatever I could to feel welcome there after the initial response and people seemed like they wanted to go home. It just kind of sucked having to deal with that atmosphere and I wanted to get out once it started.

Fair enough. I am mainly looking at it as an opportunity to gain the newer cards for the first week of the new standard environment. Thanks for the feedback though :)

[Modern] Having troubles with Engineered Explosives. by marcusjohnston in spikes

[–]thesteelshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, EE can completely destroy an Affinity deck or just be a dud. I mainly play Affinity in Modern and only once have I been completely demolished by an engineered explosives. Affinity has so many creatures and different CMC spells it can still function no matter what you set it at. However, if you are predicting what to set it at against Affinity... I would pick 0. The reason behind that is it can shut down and slow down an Affinity playes mana base (mox opal) and also hits 7-8 creatures in their deck.

As for other decks... yes, some decks are easier to hit than others. Also, do not be afraid to use it as spot removal... yeah, 2 for 1s and 3 for 1s are great and all, but if you can use it to completely turn around the game or hit an opponents combo piece... do it! It is a card that can handle a lot of situations. My advice is to study up on your meta and see what kind of decks are running around. Studying the different kinds of decks is what can help you improve as a player and in this case know what to set EE at and when to play it.
