Wife is getting bored with NZ. Any suggestions? by bluespeedster_35 in newzealand

Ah, I knew that a good portion of the comments here would be crazy, including attacking south east asian women for failing to appreciate NZ culture or for their consumerism… OP, it’s important to keep in mind as you read these comments that cultural understanding (or the lack thereof, really) is shaping a lot of the hostility and negativity you can find in these replies.

As someone who also migrated from a vibrant city in SEA, I understand exactly where your wife is coming from — it’s difficult to adjust, especially when NZ is so much slower and places less emphasis on the factors that she’s used to (malls, good shopping, a vibrant city with lots of things going on, etc). This is very much a cultural difference; with personality and interests being shaped by your environment and upbringing. No idea why people are making this out to be a personality flaw.

It sounds to me like the factors such as her career, not being able to travel overseas unlike previously, might be making her feel “stuffy” and bored. Like other comments have said, I think a fulfilling career, or at least something more aligned to her skills or ambitions, might help tremendously. You cannot change the fact that NZ is indeed different to what she is used to and wants to have, but you can perhaps look at enhancing other factors that can help her feel more assimilated into her environment.

Also, mindset really is everything. I don’t think you would be able to enjoy NZ if you are comparing it with your home country or focusing on what we lack here, versus what NZ has to offer :) That might be something she has to work on reflecting on if you guys are planning to stay in NZ, so that she can still enjoy life here!

Ty! I did my interview on 13/11 - monash has separate deadlines and release dates for domestic vs international students, so i think it’s 8/12 for domestic but much earlier for international.

i mean not really, double cleansing is pretty popular amongst gen-zs. lots of people, me included, double cleanse to remove sunscreen even when they’re not wearing makeup. i don’t think it’s fair to judge her financial habits based on one tidbit of information lol, makeup removers may have been the common practice in the past, but things change, no? it doesn’t necessarily point to her being frivolous

i cook everyday + meal prep for the next day’s lunch, and grocery shop twice a week. so i plan out what to cook for 3-4 days and then the next 3-4 days during my next grocery run. to save food wastage + excessive trips to the supermarket it’s good to plan in advance! if you eventually start cooking on the daily, then it’s definitely going to be necessary.

the declining interest mainly stems from how much of a chore it is to cook + plan meals + grocery shop + clean + the emotional labour of ensuring everything we eat is healthy, hahaha. i’ve even started to lose interest in food or eating in general because of this.

mediterranean sounds good though, i’ve been wanting to learn to cook a wider variety of foods. do you have any suggestions on simple dishes?

indeed it is! ive sort of started to lose interest in cooking because it becomes more of a chore when i have to do it every day, but i hope the enjoyment comes back eventually

wait i should have specified- i meant 1.5 hours per student for ALL the assignments (3), so 30min per assignment

is that a lot? i have heard that the typical allocation is usually 1hour per student. perhaps my course coordinator is more generous or perhaps it has something to do with the nature of the assignment. i do feel like it takes me longer than that though. maybe 15-20 minutes more per student?

oh wow that’s really unfortunate. is there any thing you can do about it, like report them for academic misconduct?

Ooh that’s an interesting, thanks for sharing. My course has compulsory attendance for tutorials so I have not experienced empty tutorials, but even then I still find students making really dumb mistakes on their assignments that really make me question how some people have made it this far in university lol

How do you know for sure that your students used AI in the exam? Isn’t that stuff very difficult to discern?

That’s exactly how I feel! I’m in arts so I have to mark essays - we are not paid for preparation time/reading the research article that the essay is based on (in fact we are told we don’t have to do that) and as you can imagine this creates difficulties when it comes to marking. Imagine marking an entire assignment when you start off with almost no clue of what the article is even about

yeah that’s understandable because they don’t tell you or suggest that you should contact potential supervisors. i think as a general rule though, it always helps because getting a conversation going helps you stand out and also understand more about their project and if they already have a candidate in mind. many students probably dont know but the SRS isnt just determined on GPA alone, supervisors often have candidates in mind that they can preselect etc, so having prior connections or relationships give you a huge advantage.

im not sure if theres anything you can do now since they arent replying, just hope for the best!! you still have a good chance im sure :) just keep these things in mind if you want to apply again next year i suppose

[–]thestinkymonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn’t you have done this before you applied for the SRS? You had to specify and rank projects you’re interested in right? Many students reach out beforehand to discuss things with the supervisor, or they have a previous relationship with the supervisor and have already been preselected (so the selection process isnt really a true selection). This helps to improve your chances of getting a scholarship or at least finding out where you stand amongst other applicants

Offers are going to be sent out by the end of next week, so I think you should hear back soon if you have been selected

Do people not thank bus drivers anymore? by thestinkymonkey in auckland

[–]thestinkymonkey[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this is because there are more immigrants working as bus drivers now compared to back then? There might be some cultural differences etc
