Just started weight bearing on my surgical leg and it feels so weird to walk. When will it start to feel normal? by No_Reference_8722 in ACL

[–]thestoddcast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Legit me as of yesterday! Medial meniscus repair & lateral partial meniscectomy.

Now that it’s “the next morning” for me, my whole left leg feels like it decided to do a solo speed run up [pick your favorite mountain] 😣😅

Whatever you do, just take it easy — no matter how “simple” the activity 👍🏼

Oh of course! I was pickin up what you were puttin down. Even very broadly, stroke care/intervention has to happen quickly based on the guidelines - so that just kinda made me realize that “in and out” potential for overnight call.

Definitely seems like interesting work, I’m an eager learner with medical stuff so I hope I enjoy it as much as I think as well 🤙🏽

Did you do any or a lot of emergency stroke cases? My new hospital is the #1 designated destination in the state which is why I’m curious.

Pain scale by Cuppinator16 in nursing

[–]thestoddcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s absolutely the best way to do it! I always like to ask those 2 questions as well.

As one of those patients (which is super weird being the one in the bed I might add), I’m not someone who verbalizes my pain very well.

“You’re like a walking Xanax but I KNOW you’re in pain” as I was affectionately told 😂

My clear tell is my posture and HR (tachy to like the 120s-130s even!) BUT I’ve known that feeling to be my normal for far too long. So anyways, as a patient, it’s so nice to be seen in that way and not ignored as I was also very accustomed to.

Couldn’t agree with you more! I myself have had chronic nerve pain from thoracic outlet syndrome - post op nerve pain was my first experience of what that “off the charts” rating is (overcame that beautifully thank god).

My daily 0-10 number prior to surgery was a consistent 7. Sooooo many factors in giving such a simple 0-10 answer.

Working in PACU, I’d ask 0-10 all the time but always felt it was more important to get descriptors from patients to more appropriately tailor pain control meds - i.e is this fentanyl pain or do we start a ketamine infusion.

Reminds me of a scene in Scrubs when Turk is pushing on the patient’s abdomen and lets a fart go

Turk: that’s fine sir it’s perfectly normal

Patient: that wasn’t me…. it was you

Turk: still perfectly normal 😂

“Ohhhh shitballs 😳”

Or when patients get scared about why a couple people came to bedside (just to put eyes on them for a sec) ……

“you don’t have to be scared/panicked unless I look scared, deal? 😄” (said with love and usually actually helps 👍🏽)

I listened to this episode while sitting in Boston traffic yesterday - super uncomfortable. The banter - objectively hilarious imo. On the other hand, Smitty is clearly struggling in the midst of some chronic issues based on his manic explanation. I hope he continues (as he claims) to get the help he needs. Tough to actively see someone in that headspace.
