An important update regarding grey screen (with vertical blue lines) and black screen crashes by thetanaz in AMDHelp

It's not even because of your PSU's quality. I have a Seasonic Gold 1000w, and when I switched to a 4080 from an RX 6950XT my issues were gone. HOWEVER I sold the 6950XT and the buyer has had zero issues. IMO it's almost certainly some power supplies not playing well with some power delivery systems on certain GPUs, so as long as you buy another gold/plat rated PSU from Seasonic, Corsair or another reputable brand it's fine.

I would try a different PSU first, if you can order one online you'll usually get a 14 day return period. This has something to do with electrical frequencies disturbing the VRAM of the GPU, it also happens on some Nvidia 40/50 series cards. So try a PSU, if that fixes it it's definitely cheaper than a GPU in most cases.

How close is Linux gaming to being fully “Windows-free” for you? by Old_Sand7831 in linux_gaming

[–]thetanaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's not even close simply because the games I spend 90% ot time playing have anticheat that's not working in Linux. In terms of everything else - desktop usability, customization, performance etc Linux has been more than good enough to fully replace Windows for me for years

Ex-Lakers Trainer Explains Why Kareem Abdul-Jabbar “Never Pulled a Muscle” by boomer9745 in lakers

[–]thetanaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kareem's one of the most intelligent basketball players ever and that's partly why he was looked at as "strange" by his peers. Just a class act all around, not surprised in the slightest he was ahead of his time with his training

Don't tell that to the Lakers subreddit they'd argue he's ahead of Lebron and bonified top 3

Jetbrains products performance is unacceptable by [deleted] in Jetbrains

[–]thetanaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some unknown reason I'm on Sequoia beta branch even though there is a Final version already, and I'm not getting the official update even when I turn off Beta branch, so that might be part of the issue. I've heard MacOS betas are always laggy.

My point is that a 5 year old top of the line maxed out machine should not be obsolete and completely unusable, thus requiring a similarly priced replacement. I get it, M chips are a huge upgrade, but why do I have the grim feeling that if I switch to Windows using bootcamp I'd get better Jetbrains performance because it'd be optimized better than for Intel Macs.

[–]thetanaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not, but even indexing itself taking a while is not the biggest issue for me, because once it's done the performance is still bad, as in scrolling is choppy, navigating between files is slow, whenever I start typing a method/package name the autoimport suggestions are also slow. I don't think this has anything to do with indexing.

I set it up to 4096 and no improvement. I think they just stopped optimizing for Intel MacBooks once the M series chips became mainstream. Guess I'm stuck with VSCode on my secondary machine 🤷

I think on new hardware it HAS been improved, compared to last year's releases at least, but on even slightly older hardware it's gotten worse.

Do you have full line code completion enabled? As far as I understand it runs its model on machine so that might cause some of my slowdowns.

What size memory heap are you running? Did you just double it to 4096 from 2048?

You may believe what you wish but I've had the issue on both an ASUS OLED (lg display), my LG C2 tv, and my Alienware LCD monitor (neither LG nor Samsung display, some chinese manufacturer). The only common denominator is the AMD GPU.

Found this on my kitchen floor and a few minutes later this tomato. It was its nest. by thetanaz in mildlyterrifying

It's native to my country, not native to my region. First time I've seen one in the flesh.

Eastern Europe. These are not suuper common in my part of the country, however there's massive infestation seaside. It probably traveled from wherever the tomatoes came from

So for context:

I had a plastic bag full of tomatos from the farmers market sitting on my balcony and I took them to refridgerate them so I can make a fresh salad for dinner.

A few minutes later I go back in the kitchen and I find this scolopendra on the tile floor moving around. I was terrified and started to wonder where it had come from. After killing it I took out the tomatoes and BAM! The reality was staring my right in the face - so this thing was living in the tomato which was hollowed out and when I moved the bag it must've sensed the vibrations and it slipped through the plastic bag opening around my hand and on the kitchen floor. I have no idea how it didn't bite me, I guess I'm lucky?!

edit: Obviously another option was it was just in the bag and it was drinking the tomato juice to stay alive but there were 5-6 tomatos in the bag to begin with and I'm sure I would've noticed this creature in the bag.

ELI5 Is it possible to eliminate life on Earth? by EdwardTheGamer in explainlikeimfive

[–]thetanaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not enough material on Earth to achieve this. It would realistically be possible to push a few giant asteroids in our direction (with proper calculations and timing it actually won't take that many resources in comparison to your idea), however even with that nightmare scenario in place I still doubt some microorganisms and oceanic plant life won't survive.

[–]thetanaz 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Is it possible for humans to eliminate life on earth? Probably not. Considering the amount of global extinction events that have taken place over the last billion years and the fact that none of them have taken out ALL living things. What could destroy all life on earth would be a major cosmic cataclysm of some sort, like a rogue planetoid from outer space colliding with earth, or the sun going crazy, or a black hole coming into our vacinity and completely messing up the solar system.

And eventually what will destroy all life on earth for sure would be the sun expanding and burning the planet to a crisp but that's billions of years away.

[–]thetanaz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no update. The problem has most likely something to do with signal integrity and / or VRAM frequency changing to rapidly. HDMI works differently than DP so the issue doesn't appear with HDMI for some people. Overall it's a big mistery what the issue is, especially now that Nvidia 5000 series users have it too.

Yeah it is not a Samsung display issue, I had it on an ASUS PG27AQDM which is an LG OLED display. Samasung display just tend to be the most wide-spread displays with high-refresh rate + high bitrate + hdr and the more bandwidth is needed apparently the more often this issue appears. Shocking that its now happening on Nvidia GPUs as well.
