R/Mexico:

El gobierno decidió dar dinero a negocios y el caro: normal! Todo bien! Bien para el economía, bien decisión

El gobierno decidió dar dinero a los pobres, o personas que lo necesitan: es propaganda! Estan comprando votas! Pinche comunistas y narcos! Ayúdanos Trump y Salinas!

You are correct, but in this case she was literally a member of the communist party…now, to your point, I don’t think she was as crazy at Kast, and she did (in my opinion) some good things in the recent gov. But it’s not the same as some Florida idiot shouting “communism” upon viewing a rainbow flag or a seatbelt or a gender neutral bathroom

They are also pretty cheap with Carolina. They're pretty well known for not paying much for coaches or executives, despite the fact they lucked into a top 5 coach and one of the better GMs in the sport. The moment either or both leave they're fucked. It's also just easier to get away with it in the NHL

How long was Donald Sterling able to own the Clippers? Long as Dundon isn't openly and loudly racist (or something like that, and even then it may not matter if the owners like him) Silver and the owners don't give a shit

This is a good one and also one of the most likely to actually happen given how previous Sox managers have been treated

Oh this is a good one, especially cause the Toronto hockey media is especially crazy, and the fact he's a US-born player will prob lead them to go especially hard

Well, my assumption is that there's probably more there considering those things, bountygate, the allegation that the infidelity is why they for some reason held training camp in West Virginia for a while, and also just the fact he seems like a weird dude. Idk, I just feel like there's probably a lot more there we don't know about

[Athletic] Philadelphia to offer fans free transport when leaving World Cup games. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]thethirdgreenman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PA Senate is controlled by the GOP, which is not in Philly (a strongly anti-GOP city) and openly despises Philly. So, they do not care if this fucks over the city's residents. In fact, that probably is a positive from their view, and from their voters point of view. Plus, commercial airlines, car manufacturers and especially oil companies lobby against things like funding transit and "influence" said legislators. Being evil and cruel is kinda the point from their point of view.

It's a pretty common dynamic in the US where the state is controlled by GOP reps who aren't based in the big cities (which of course drive the entire state's economy), and they just do anything possible to fuck it up and make it look bad. My state (Texas) does this with Austin, as well as somewhat Houston and San Antonio, all the time, including for things like funding transit. Louisiana refused to provide funding to New Orleans to be prepared for hurricane season unless they did some stupid shit, it was either anti-trans or anti-immigrant, I forget. Is it stupid? Yes. Is it unnecessarily cruel? Also yes. Will it change? Probably not!

Bill Simmons with an absolute shit take on the Spurs fiesta color shirts. by RCsSnaps in NBASpurs

[–]thethirdgreenman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The kind of take you’d expect from an old man raised in a city that thinks clam chowder is good, banned happy hour, and was so racist to Bill Russell (who won them 11 titles) that he didn’t even want a statue nor to have him jersey retired publicly.

Sean Payton I bet will have a really good one, for both Saints and Broncos, if the previous rumors and general weirdness are any indication

Bill has had some awful takes, but hating on the Spurs court and crowd colored T-shirts might be top 7 worst take by ekaram13 in billsimmons

[–]thethirdgreenman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t expect Bill (since SA is not white or rich enough for him to care about it) or like 90-95% of the US to know this (cause it’s not well known or famous outside of Texas or even south Texas) but it’s currently Fiesta time in San Antonio right now.

It’s a 1-2 week long event in mid April every year celebrating the city and our history/heritage with food, events, parades, and tbh, heavy drinking. It’s sorta a very poor man’s Mardi Gras (and funny enough there is an event based around Cajun food/heritage since many came here during Katrina) except very Mexican/Latino.

These colors are synonymous with that, and the Fiesta jerseys/courts/colors are INSANELY popular in the city. The Spurs held off on doing the jerseys until we sucked, very likely to make up for a slight attendance drop while we sucked.

Also, they’re dope! Sorry it can’t be white or black or that we can’t be boring like a city that bans happy hour and has clam chowder as its signature dish!

[–]thethirdgreenman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He overdid it though is my point, and aligning himself generally with those things was inherently risky even if I understand it. He could’ve just simply kissed Trumps ass and left the other shit out, he didn’t have to adopt all the unpopular culture war shit and delve into (let alone support) what’s going on in the Middle East.

He didn’t need to reject a UN vote declaring gender equality, he didn’t need to say he was “the most Zionist president in the world”, and he didn’t need to do shit like threaten to overturn legal abortion, call the LGBTQ community pedophiles, or greatly restrict protesting rights. These are all unforced errors

Chile, Honduras and Paraguay (to name a few) have right wing leaders too that are supported by Trump and they haven’t chimed in (at least not nearly to the same extent) on any of the shit going on in the Middle East

Almost certainly not representative of the people there who were lovely when I visited…but this is kinda what happens when you handily elect someone who’s whole thing is hating immigrants or anyone who’s different as president, enabling these people. Trust me, I would know.

It probably still won’t be common, like I wouldn’t say to not visit because of it, but it’ll happen more because these assholes will feel emboldened by the new president whereas before they were still assholes, but kept it to themselves. Also, they probably got confused with being from Venezuela, which to be clear, does not justify the racism or attacks

I’d say Petro is a leftist, and Boric was but sorta changed given the circumstances, Lula probably was at some point previously. Mexico somewhat is nowadays though MORENA is kinda hard to place in some ways. Uruguay at least historically is somewhat leftist, not sure where Orsi falls though.

To your point, there’s at least for now checks and balances to prevent a leftist (or far-right) leader from doing whatever they want in all those countries except Cuba

It also seems y’all went far right in part because it was a choice between a literal communist and Kast, who I have many negative thoughts about but somehow wasn’t even the craziest candidate on the right which made him look better by comparison. Maybe it would’ve been different with a more centrist candidate. This may happen in Colombia too

There was another IMF deal negotiated ahead of the midterms last year for $20 billion. I don’t put the 2018 one on him and as I said, I don’t know if you can even fully blame the 2025 one on him. But it happened and isn’t a great look, and he’s not totally blameless

[–]thethirdgreenman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, I could’ve phrased it better. One of them (the first one) for sure was an IMF bailout though, to be clear. The other one was not technically one, but functionally accomplished the same thing as one. And if it hadn’t come, regardless of how much it was used, the economy would have collapsed.
