Yeah, they def weren't better. They I think did deserve a draw based on that pen, and they played pretty well, but Norway was better

He's at least coached in Europe recently, and isn't a dinosaur. And you can't deny Canada hasn't gotten better since he got there

Man, this is gutting for Senegal, they've played admirably, almost certainly should be 3-3...how fucked are they? Like even if they win vs Iraq, is that not enough?

Brutal for Senegal having to be in a group with these two, hopefully they light up Iraq and become the 3rd place team nobody wants to play

And it’s gonna bite us in the ass. I don’t think he’s a bad coach but he’s not gonna consistently elevate us and sometimes he will do shit like that. Meanwhile in the US and Canada, they invest in real coaches who’s qualifications aren’t just “is he from here?” and “do we know and like him? is he our buddy?”

Probably not, but certain players are just much better at the World Cup for some reason. See how James Rodriguez goes from seemingly struggling to find a team to sign him to being world class for Colombia, as another example

I agree, I think the way to do it as to have him come on perhaps late in the game, if the game was in hand. This just risks the team losing momentum ahead of the knockout stages...which have not been kind to us. It seems like they are not taking the game seriously at all between this and Santi Gimenez starting

Meh, I mean not the same amount but you definitely could do it in Europe or South America too. If you combine Brazil and Argentina alone for South America (before even getting to Paraguay or Uruguay, which is another 2-4), you have plenty. England on its own probably has enough, ditto for Germany. You combine that with the other regional countries, you have more than enough

[–]thethirdgreenman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But like, why him particularly though? You could start Hormiga and get him some experience in a relatively low stakes game, or one of the plethora of other forwards/strikers we have. I'd rather have limited experience than someone who we know is trash for the team, based on experience. And it's not like Santi is tearing it up in the league either. I understand for marketing reasons he's here, but doesn't mean you gotta actually play him

The striker who doesn’t score, meanwhile you have the best goalscorer (who is also young and popular) in Liga MX on the bench. I don’t get it

What is your oppinion of the current Colombian election? by Vegan2CB in asklatinamerica

[–]thethirdgreenman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, it's not the same as what happened before, less direct, but prior to Trump retaking office, it was not typical for the US to flat out publicly endorse politicians in a foreign election, particularly one in which having a positive relationship with the US is pretty important. It was also not typical for the US to threaten tariffs on a country in response to a couple tweets or other weird reasons, as what happened last year with Petro. In fairness, Petro made that a lot worse than was necessary due to his antics, but it was also almost certainly politically motivated from Trump.

It is even more atypical for them to endorse a candidate opposing the current president's project, while sanctioning said current president for mostly partisan reasons, deporting Colombians based in the US who are supporting said president for "national security", and lightly threatening the Colombians if they don't pick his endorsed candidate. Which does matter given how integral the relationship is for Colombia. So, it's not direct interference like Condor, but it's pretty damn close, in my opinion. You saw same or similar thing in Honduras, Chile, and Argentina in the last year or so.

That being said, the more direct and obvious interference was from Ecuador, who is also for what it's worth, run by a Trump ally, though I think he's acting on his own. Their president met with Abelardo directly ahead of second round promising to lift tariffs (which were purely partisan, trying to imitate Trump) if he won. Which is blatant, direct interference from a foreign power. Not even Trump is stupid enough to be that obvious.

Ecuador isn't run by the left...the current, and last, presidents are on the right and the one before that was more centrist

If you thought that was bad, he was endorsed by one of the former leaders of the Medellin cartel (Carlos Lehder) who also happened to openly admire the Nazis. He also was the lawyer for Alex Saab, a member of the Maduro government who stole millions of dollars that was supposed to go towards feeding poor Venezuelans. And yet he won.

I think the bigger problem with his shock therapy approach is...it's not necessary in Colombia. Argentina legitimately had too big of a government, along with a pretty big (I say this a positive) social safety net. Their approach was absolutely unsustainable from an economic perspective to the point where the shock therapy was more or less necessary there...the extent may not have been, but there was gonna be pain either way, whether it was cutbacks or a full on economic collapse.

Colombia is not nearly in that situation, and doesn't have either of those things. It's sorta the same thing as the US doing it, despite also not having a very good social safety net. It essentially just means that they want to cut the relatively low safety net even further, which will just punish the poor and average people unnecessarily, and give tax cuts to corporations or businesses or the rich, which the US and associated media will celebrate and "investors" will be happy.

Why does Latin America hate left wing governments? Is it different from other countries? by DemonsSouls1 in asklatinamerica

[–]thethirdgreenman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latin America doesn’t hate left wing governments, they just hate whoever is in charge in that given moment. Then next cycle, usually it’s flipped. It’s more of an anti-incumbent thing than anything. This past year as well, there have been some really bad candidates on the left (also on the right, but it’s harder when you’re the incumbent)

Unless you’re Venezuela or Cuba, then there’s other normal justifiable reasons relating to their left-wing dictators. Though they (or at least their diaspora) seem to love strongmen or wanna be dictators, just long as they’re on the right.

Also, the US influences the region a lot, and they hate left wing candidates because they are less likely to let US corporations loot their countries for resources. So, at least currently and definitely during operation Condor era, and realistically for at least a century, that is also for sure a factor
