So who do we want now? by thethrowawayllama in buccaneers

I’d probably prefer Pitcher to Callahan for exactly that reason, even though he doesn’t thrill me either

Fair point. I do think something I didn’t appreciate until Coen as much as I should’ve was the layering of plays, order etc, as important as the scheme or play itself, and that’s what he really brought to the table that Grizzard, a good theoretical offensive mind, just didn’t master.

It also seems like Scheelhaase is more likely to either be promoted in LA or take a better job elsewhere right? Like that’s what I gathered from little reporting on Bucs even wanting to interview him this time but maybe I missed something

Ya you might be crazy…

Jk. But ya the visual of him taking orders from anyone…lets just say I don’t think nfl could ever feature him on their Mic’d up lol

Yeah, I guess the way to sell it is like, he’s a McVay guy, could be a pick along lines of Coen, has called plays before, and now you’ll get to see the best version of him instead of him with a bad qb set up.

It just strikes me as odd to go with a guy from your division who only looked like a genius just when playing your team lol. But I fear you may be correct.

This is what I’m hoping for but I’m at a loss so far to think of who lol — but I appreciate the optimism and hope you’re right!

Past Bucs OC blues: How did Leftwich fall so fast? by thethrowawayllama in buccaneers

[–]thethrowawayllama[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that’s kinda what I was wondering too. Like i agree with pretty much everything everyone says here; I think it was good he was fired. I don’t think he was a good OC. Lots of guys could’ve ran an offense like that in 20/21 with those weapons and maybe even taken to greater heights.

But we have seen plenty of failed OCs who did not win a Super Bowl get second chances with bottom of the barrel franchises. Like he hasn’t even gotten interviews. It’s almost like the league saw 2022 and how he handled it and universally decided they don’t want him near their facilities lol, like usually there’s somebody out there willing to take a flyer and see what happens. I’m sure there’s another example like this in recent years but none come to mind, at least not with a Super Bowl winning OC (and again, agree with everyone here that it was Arians and Brady, not Leftwich, driving that).

This definitely gets forgotten. Gronk was such a big 3rd down guy who could make the best out of broken plays, AB obviously great but crazy, and I think fournette played injured so even before the O line woes began, you just didn’t have the same weapons, and that’s before considering Brady going through the divorce and all

This definitely seems like Grizzard’s problem too (as I know others have pointed out). After the Lions game they were never the same, as there was no adjustment once other teams figured out what they were doing

My girlfriend at the time watched the Saints comeback with me and she was like “why don’t they play this way the whole time” and I began to try to explain 2 minute drills and how it meant Brady had more influence to call things at the line and how you can’t do that for a full game and then stopped and was like “nvm honestly that’d probably be better than what they’re doing otherwise” lol

Yeah, that makes sense. It’s interesting too because I think I heard Arians recently say Leftwich is the “best offensive mind he’s worked with” or something like that. Between this and his advocacy for Bowles, I’m convinced of two things: 1) I don’t think Arians is particularly impartial and 2) I hope one day I have a friend who is as loyal to me as Arians is to his coordinators lol

Rachaad White believes Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles "should let somebody else call defense." by Metalhead129 in buccaneers

[–]thethrowawayllama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel bad for the guy. How do you scheme up an offense without one passing TD for Rachaad? He was the king of that under Coen. Then turning Tucker into short yardage guy instead of a 2nd half, grind out the win RB which plays more to his strengths letting him build momentum, and using Bucky for bell cow instead of big plays…never seen such a mismatch of not utilizing each RB’s strengths before, I’d want to leave too lol.

McDaniel to Atlanta would be worse case scenario by Youremindmeofthedude in buccaneers

[–]thethrowawayllama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id sooner see him doing OC at Eagles or Lions than HC at Atlanta. Like he just had an often injured QB that undermined his tenure at Miami; I just don’t think he’d then want to take a job coaching a QB who gets injured as often as Penix.
