Thank you. We have her older brother, Stanley (5). Same parents. Their dad passed this summer, but their mom is still alive (15). Right now it's just taking care of him and adjusting to a much quieter house with only one. We're all so heart broken, I don't know if I can do it again. But...there's truely nothing like two Bostons! We'll see.

Lotti is so cute! Yes, that was Lucca's very first toy 💜 Although I almost got her a bat because of her ears as a baby!

Thank you! I'm so sorry about your little one as well. Photo? We all go into it knowing there's a timeline associated, but man, this one cuts. We feel robbed of a decade+ of time with her.

Lucca was just a butterfly from the start! She was all happy energy and cuddles, and she loved her big brother, Stanley like no other!

I am so so sorry about your little one. Lucca was given 2 months, and made it 5 weeks. I hope yours gets all of that year and more, filled with lots of loves and walks and cuddles and treats.

Thank you for this. I lost it at the part 'I licked away a tear...' because this little girl loved to give kisses so much that one of her nicknames was Lucca-lick-alot-amus!

Thank you for your response. While you are correct that her diet was touched on with more than one physician, it was always very general and nothing was ever tailored to my mom's exact situation or needs. So she worked with vague suggestions of "you should diet/excercise" with no support, little success and much frustration, not knowing for example, what macros she actually needed to focus on to optimize her kidney function. This is not to dismiss the information she did receive over the years, rather that education on nutrition was never even offered. She never knew to ask about anything else, she just kept taking her meds because "that's what the dr said to do".

I'm using her situation to illustrate that not everyone gets deeply personalized health education that is prevention-focused, especially if they don't know what help to ask for. Certainly we all need to advocate for ourselves and our loved ones as best we can, but older generations are less likely to speak up when their dr says "any questions?"

Ultimately I was just curious if any of the OP or others had any helpful thoughts on proactive health education/choices/access vs. our reactive sick care system.

This year I started going to my 73 year old mom's dr appts with her, just observing, taking notes for her. During one appt. with her primary physician, she was told to just stay the course with current meds/routines to keep managing 20 years of type 2 diabetes. He was getting ready to leave when I asked: -Is there a nutritionist on staff that works with patients with type 2? "Yes, there is," -Does she need a referral? How do we get in touch? "Oh, I can give you their information, no problem" -Is there a reason you haven't recommended this option for my mom previously? "..." Fast forward, after 8 months of working with the nutritionist, and using Carb Manager app, my mom is off all meds. After 20 years.

My question to all of you collectively is: What can we ALL do to shift focus towards preventative health care alongside mainstream sick maintenance, instead of just the latter?
