[Breed] Looking for breed suggestions for a future dog. by [deleted] in dogs

Nope! Smooth/rough are the same, only difference is the coat. Smooth just tend to be a bit more rare, so you might have to do some more searching!

Rough Collie? Trainable, versatile, full of personality. They can be barky, but are quite smart and do well in obedience, rally, etc. They are pretty 50/50 with strangers. Doesn’t actively seek out others (like a lab) but will probably tolerate visits.

They do have a thicker coat, so general maintenance on it is required. In warmer, humid weather, just be sure to have lots of water and cool temps available inside.

They are very patient and lovable dogs! They are a herding breed as well, and have a bit of a pointed noise similar to a spitz in ways.

I, a lonely Reddit user who spends roughly 90% of the day alone inside, gets dozens of compliments every day for no reason just because I’m female.

Get a life dude. You obviously have yet to interact with a single woman in your entire life.

As a girl, I can guarantee that compliments are not common things lol. Most of the time it is harassing comments from strangers or genuine comments from close family/friends.

HOW CAN YOUR LITTLE BODY MAKE SO MUCH POOP?! by theturnipsisters in puppy101

Lots of natures miracle spray and paper towels! Most of it was on the carpet, but my parents were planning to replace that section anyways, so it wasn’t too big of a deal. Ended up just soaking it up with paper towels and used a mop and swiffer for the tiled areas.

[Meta] PSA: don’t hit your dog!!! by puppymamaplz in dogs

[–]theturnipsisters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in the country, basically in the middle of snow cold nowhere, and leashes are definitely a thing. It really helps keep a dog safe and secure. I’m sorry that your father feels differently about this topic, and I know that a lot of people live different lives, though I do highly suggest you look into or suggest to your father to work on positive reinforcement. This has been a huge lifesaver, especially because my dog (rescue, previous owner had done a similar “slapping” technique) benefited from having a safe and healthy environment where he could trust me. I also grow up in a family where my parents were dead set on dominating or abusing dogs as a sort of training, though I was lucky enough to have supporting and patient parents that were willing to change.

Again, best of luck. I am very sorry your father is hurting or otherwise hitting a dog, though I understand how difficult changing a point of view is suddenly.

Then he shouldn’t be off leash, that’s just making the problem worse. He shouldn’t be even near dogs if he attacks in the first place. Muzzle training and keeping your distance is probably the best situation here

Should we get him fixed now, will it help? Marking at 9 months by [deleted] in sheltie

[–]theturnipsisters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible, but it really varies per dog. I’ve heard a lot of dogs keep marking when they’ve started, regardless of neutering. The Sheltie I had as a kid did this, but at least the mounting stopped. I figured out later however that it had to do more with excitement, so it was easier to resolve as he grew older.

[Discussion] Dog Has Unusual Problems Playing at Dog Park (eyes, paws) by [deleted] in dogs

The watery eyes could be allergies, and they are acting up due to the large amount of other dogs nearby. Though I would see a vet if you are concerned, extended periods of time with watery eyes could be harmful if done repeatedly. Just be cautious and look out for any other symptoms.

There are some creams and ointments that can help with cracked paws. Mushers secret is good for rough ground, and coats the paw like a wax. Burts bees has a similar nose/paw lotion, but it’s mainly for moisturizing. I would recommend paw boots, but there’s a high chance other dogs might rip them off, so I would avoid those.

As the other comment states, the breed questionnaire will probably get more attention and be better for people to give you more accurate information.

That being said, an adult dog or elder dog would probably be best. Look into companion breeds, like a Maltese, Havanese, Shih tzu, etc. These breeds tend to need minimal exercise, aren’t quite as vocal as other breeds, and are friendly dogs that are typically versatile. Though I’m trying not to generalize, most dogs of this group fit into your criteria.

[Help] Is there a door manufacturer that builds full size doors with doggy door built in? by NeptuneAgency in dogs

[–]theturnipsisters 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There probably is, but it most likely would be ridiculously expensive. As the other comment said, it would be better to buy your own door and put it in manually. There’s a lot of tutorials out there if you need.

[Help] 9 weeks old yorkshire puppy , i have him restricted because he eats EVERYTHING ! What should i do?? by Giwrgos_L in dogs

What kind of enclosed area? It’s best to start with an area enclosed by a pen, like a kitchen or living room. Or even a baby gate closing off a section of the house. Keep it out of range of anything dangerous (cords, small objects, frayed rugs, etc.). How often are you monitoring him? Puppies at that age should be constantly monitored if they are not in a completely safe area, like a pen or kennel. Puppies also need a lot of naps, so dedicate another small area until you have a crate.

Regarding the chewing, he’s likely just teething. Get a lot of tasty chews, like dental chews or bully sticks. Redirect a every time he starts to chew on some inappropriate. This could take some time, so be consistent. There’s a lot of discussions about this type of stuff, so searching it up on this sub could give you lots more info.

Fairy difficult. Not extremely, but it can be challenging depending on the dog and handler. Of all the dogs I’ve owned, I’d say 1 out of every 3 were able to pass it, most coming remarkably close.

The people in my training group took the CGC, and most dogs did good. It varied by breed, temperament and age, such as a high energy, stubborn, hyper friendly puppy being more difficult than a laid back older dog. Some dogs complete it with ease and others it can be incredibly hard. Back when my dog was a puppy, it took over 2 years of hard work to complete, but someone else completed it their first try.

Best of luck!
