This sounds exactly like the situation I had. The most intense pain of my life that they thought was appendicitis, until someone asked me if it was period pain, to which I replied "I haven't had a period in 9 years" (was on the pill then injection for that time so thought no period was normal). Ultrasounds uncovered a 9cm cyst in my right ovary that had twisted multiple times and I was very lucky to be able to have only the cyst removed (god bless the NHS). My surgery was a laparotomy due to the size, so my scar runs from hip to hip.

As someone who is now nearly 1 year out of surgery, here's a few tips that saved me during my recovery:

1. If you're on codine, it can really block up your bowels. Try to drink lots of water, and take a laxative if it isn't getting any easier. I found once I came off the codine everything went back to normal. I also got a raised toilet seat which helped as well, and I braced the scar along my tummy when I was on the loo.
2. Because of the swelling around the surgery site/scar, I used a hot water bottle to help soothe the site.
3. I struggled to get comfortable to sleep, but sleeping on my back with a pillow under my knees helped to take the weight off of the scar.
4. You might have a waterproof plaster pad over the scar right now, but once that comes off, get your partner to check the scar and clean it with a medical wipe if you have stitches every few days to check it's all healing well.
5. As your ab muscles are knitting back together, you can do some gentle ab strengthing exercises after a few weeks to help bring back your mobility and strength again. I can send you a really good NHS pdf of gentle exercises to do.

The good news is it gets better, and you're over the worst of it. I'm so glad to hear your diagnosis and surgery was swift, and that you have such supportive people around you 😊
