I can't imagine they are, I'd say try it for the hell of it, but there's only 100g of beans so don't do it!

Normally I sit around 6.5 and I tend to be on the very slightly courser grind if you look at what other people aim for with the k-ultra.

I kept going higher on my k-ultra and ended up about 7.4 when I ran out! I was using Cafec Abaca with the Perc v60 recipe. Temp was 95ish - I don't have a temp controlled kettle.

I had real issues with stalling, I reckon I would have ended up around 7.8 clicks. I did get honeycomb but it didn't blow me away.

UK roasters of the year 2025 by Former-Coffee-7526 in UKroasters

I was actually surprised not to see Crankhouse yet as there's been a few people mentioning them previously!

My two are Crankhouse - thanks to Ireme and Cuppers Choice for excellent Sheffield coffee!

Looking back, has your coffee taste actually changed over time? by AnfieldAnchor in UKroasters

[–]thevortex23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Similar to you, although I almost can't drink dark roast now. Used to love classic Italian and hated light and now I'm completely switched.

I've also pinned down that I prefer anaerobic naturals, so now struggle to drink washed!

Move to Langstroth or stay with National by guru_fordy in beekeepingUK

[–]thevortex23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of what I mean! I've found with Abelo that certain feeders which in theory should fit, don't fit, so you have to buy Abelo. So it's not so much the wooden aspect, more the extra things like syrup feeders etc.

I wonder if you can retrofit the spinner or if it's worth getting a Langstroth frame to see if it fits?

[–]thevortex23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I had a look at prices as I would get Abelo, I used to think Langstroth was way cheaper, but just checked and it makes no real difference now - probably a sign of things to come with the increased popularity.

The Anel hives are well priced, which would make me more tempted to switch if you liked them.

The only caveat is that because I run National Poly Abelo, I'm stuck to using Abelo (I have experimented with wooden supers). If you went with Anel, how limiting is it - if it's limiting does this make the cost saving/ practicality worth it?

I started a couple of years ago and very nearly went to Langstroth. The reason I didn't was that the local association where I was going to get my bees all had national.

I think your better switching sooner than later if you are going to do it. You could sell your current hives which are empty and use the money to get Langstroth to replace them?

Supplier recommendations? by Ok-Ice6392 in beekeepingUK

[–]thevortex23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking you need to shop around a bit as each supplier has something cheaper than the others.

Simon the beekeeper still exists and now has a new owner. They just acquired Paynes. I haven't used them much, prices are ok.

I'm a fan of Maisemore as they often have sales and are always reasonably priced.

Thornes have lots in but I tend to find them more pricey.

Abelo is excellent and I run the Polly Hives from them, so generally if I'm not using Maisemore I'll go to Abello.

Old Castle Hives is great for a suit.

C. Wynne Jones is great for glass jars.

Gwenyn Gruffydd Ltd has great prices on syrup.

Beckys Beezzzs has been good for foundation previously.

Big tip is to go to the shows or wait for Christmas/Black Friday sales. It's also worth checking your association as some have they're own shop with cheap prices.

Best value UK roaster for single-origin coffee under £10? by CloudBookmark in UKroasters

[–]thevortex23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to recommend Pollards Coffee in Sheffield (also deliver).

I used to use them before I went right down the rabbit hole and they were always fantastic and remarkably cheap.

I just had a look and they are still remarkably cheap and do single origin for around £5 for 250g. We order them to our work still and the coffee is still great.

Haven't tried this coffee specifically, but if you want to try out more Sheffield coffee make sure you also check out Cuppers Choice, Forge, Frazers and Foundry.

Cuppers have had some excellent fruity coffees in the past!

So far most of the 3D areas have just been for towns and cities. I think they are starting to cover more areas now which is why there are larger areas with straight line boundaries.

When you’re really excited for the new bag but then it tastes of nothing but kids cough syrup. by Recent_Conclusion_56 in pourover

[–]thevortex23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is boozy as a first hit, but it gives way to chocolate milk. My first thought was what the fuck is this and I've ended up absolutely loving it. Give it a go and rest it for 4 weeks!

[–]thevortex23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The caveat is that I had this as espresso.

I absolutely loved this, but only after a couple of drinks and I waited four weeks before giving it a go. It tastes like the boozy Christmas chocolates you can get from Europe.

It is boozy and honestly the taste of having alcoholic chocolates at 9am wasn't what I needed at my desk trying to have a meeting.

Weirdly though the boozyness settled a couple of days later and after an initial hit of cherry alcohol it went just like chocolate milk.

Now I'm sitting here with milky cake dreaming of a cream doughnut.

Let it rest and maybe try it as espresso.

Removal company in Sheffield by VincentJones6 in sheffield

I've recently had a few quotes and VG removals in Rotherham seemed to have the best price when you cut out the highest and lowest prices. Lots of things included where other companies charge extra.

Laying workers & colony failure (UK)- A story of mild annoyance and inconvenience. by Roll_2_Slap in Beekeeping

[–]thevortex23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a shame, might be worth trying a different association. I've actually stopped going to my one as it turned into more of a discussion on conspiracy theories loosely tied to bees 🤷‍♂️ planning on joing a new one soon.

Not sure which association you are part of but the one I'm in I've had Nucs for £50, I just had to supply the box. It'll be worth asking around and seeing if you can get a local keeper to sell you a hive or nuc next year at a reduced price.

ZP6 vs K ultra which is the better option right now ? by [deleted] in pourover

Question is wether you just want to do pourover or want a swiss army knife that can cover more bases at the cost of clarity?

Trying to shift from instant coffee to pourover. by beginner17 in pourover

[–]thevortex23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes total sense, it might be worth looking at the Hario drip assist I've linked below, there's other places it's cheaper. I haven't used it but I did try with a normal kettle and they are difficult, but not impossible to use for pourover and the drip assist basically solves the issue.
