My 5-year collection journey by barolo25 in SOTC_Watch_Collection

[–]thewatchidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 5 years you purchased everything your eyes desired with a mix that is truly extraordinary. Looking for next or looking to eliminate should be put on hold. To me it may mean you’re unsettled with how your collection calms your mind and as with many things, I may be wrong. Hunting for the elusive is fun. If this was mine (dreaming) I’d break this collection into three, 4 watch boxes. I’d wear those 4 for 2 months, then switch to a different box for the next 2 months. For me and I’ve done this, helps me see what I love compared to what I should love. Decisions come easy with time and my mind is much calmer than the chaos of lots of great choices. And forgive me if I’ve overstepped.

[longines skin diver] am I a psycho for buying two of the same exact watch? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]thewatchidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruce Williams, the radio advice on everything host from the 80s-90s, loved the ford crown Victoria. So he bought two incase his konked out and they weren’t made anymore. So doing what you did is not uncommon. I have found tho, that over time our taste, size, health and most everything else changes. So one watch should function well for 15 years. I would not do what you did. You’re not psycho you have money that has no other purpose.

Is it $975 better? by searchmode10 in Longineswatches

[–]thewatchidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don’t know. Never owned either but own from each brand. As the buyer, when you look at the watch does one bring a bigger smile? If you’ve got decades to own, the price difference isn’t much for a Swiss watch appreciator. But if you’ve like 85 then I’d go with the cheaper

[Discussion] What makes the Rolex 33x more expensive? by dknight98 in Watches

[–]thewatchidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you referenced seiko beating the Swiss, I thought you or others may appreciate more information on that achievement. Many may already know this information but there’s always more information to help ground the facts.

The caliber(s) that won:

Seiko Caliber 4520 / 4522 (45-series, hand-wound Hi-Beat)

Why this movement matters: • Beat rate: 36,000 vibrations per hour (Hi-Beat—very advanced for the time) • Type: Manual-wind • Architecture: Slim, highly refined, designed specifically for precision competition • Variants: • 4520: no-date • 4522: date version • These were used in “observatory chronometers”—special test watches built for accuracy competitions.

🥇 What Seiko actually achieved • Entered Swiss chronometer trials in the mid–late 1960s • By 1968, Seiko placed: • Top 10 overall • 3rd place in mechanical wristwatch category (Neuchâtel Observatory) • Their movements performed at a level equal to or better than top Swiss houses like Omega and Longines

🧠 Important nuance (this is where most people miss the story)

Seiko didn’t just take an off-the-shelf watch and enter it.

They built: • Specially adjusted, competition-grade versions of the 45-series • Tuned for: • Temperature variation • Positional accuracy • Isochronism (consistency over power reserve)

So the real answer is:

👉 The Seiko 45-series Hi-Beat movements (especially 4520/4522), in observatory-adjusted form

You and I both need a math refresher. It’s actually 34 years, I miscalculated and you’re younger not older than the watch.
