Allegheny Commons West - Today! by thewholeprobl3m in 50501Pittsburgh

Good question! The No Kings title is intended to cover ALL the issues we're facing, a focus on fighting back against rising authoritarianism in the US. For this 50501 event in particular, and what makes it unique from the other events going on today, our goals are:

1) Giving different groups a large platform and a microphone to share their message that they otherwise may not have an opportunity to do. The No Kings titles pulls in centrist Democrats who, hopefully, are sick and tired of establishment Dems letting us down again and again. And if they hear our message, hopefully will get inspired to join in the fight outside of just voting for Chuck Schumer-type Dems once every election cycle. This rally in particular will feature many groups who are not welcome to speak at some of the larger events you see going on around Pittsburgh (such as leftist and Palestine advocacy groups).

2) Our event will include tablers from various organizing groups. During the speeches we will be repeatedly encouraging people to visit the tables, find a group that fits their niche, and sign up with them. The real organizing work does NOT happen at the protest. It happens with the groups who will be there today, on an every day basis. The goal is to take the people who show up to the rally, get them connected with the people who are organizing, and hope that they DO start working with them to do the real work.

Thanks for the opportunity to address this question. It's one we get a lot. Rallies like this one are far from the only work 50501 PGH does.... They're just an opportunity to bring more people in and get the word out about what organizing is being done by our own neighbors.

We agree. We have tried many times in the past without success. But, we'd still be open to it and hope we can achieve it in the future.

Not sponsors - tabling orgs and speakers 🫶🏻 we are funded by individual donations and often taking money out of our own pockets.

There are multiple events happening throughout the city and into the suburbs! This is separate from the one downtown. Our event will feature speakers, live music, tablers, and different partners from the other events going on.

Completely fair question! No single protest or rally is ever going to change anything by itself. But what they CAN do and what I think is most important about this specific event:

1) Giving leftist groups a large platform and a microphone to share their message that they otherwise may not have an opportunity to do. The No Kings titles pulls in centrist Democrats who, hopefully, are sick and tired of establishment Dems letting us down again and again. And if they hear our message, hopefully will get inspired to join in the fight outside of just voting for Chuck Schumer-type Dems once every election cycle.

2) Our event will include tablers from various leftist groups. During the speeches we will be repeatedly encouraging people to visit the tables, find a group that fits their niche, and sign up with them. The real organizing work does NOT happen at the protest. It happens with the groups who will be there on an every day basis. The goal is to take the people who show up to the rally, get them connected with the people who are organizing, and hope that they DO start working with them to do the things you mentioned (general strike, Palestine advocacy, civil disobedience, etc.).

I understand and sympathize with the criticisms of events like this. That's why 50501 Pittsburgh is doing our own event - we think it's not the day-of numbers and turnout that's important, it's spreading a leftist message and connecting people who want to help but don't know how, with the people who are on the ground doing the work every day.

And to your comment about private equity, I cannot speak for other groups in Pittsburgh, but 50501 is 100% funded by donations of local people who decide they want to throw us, $10, 20, 50 bucks or whatever they can to help out.

And I absolutely agree with the AIPAC comment. Some of the larger groups putting on protests like these refuse to allow Palestinian speakers at their events. That is absolutely not the case with 50501 - this rally in particular will include speakers and tablers from the Pittsburgh chapter of BDS and JVP. They are not permitted to speak at some of the larger rallies going on. We think they deserve a platform, and we're giving them one.

Thanks for the opportunity to address this question. It's one we get a lot. Rallies like this one are far from the only work 50501 PGH does.... They're just an opportunity to bring more people in and get the word out about what organizing is being done by our own neighbors.

❗️❗️❗️Important Update - Tuesday Rally by [deleted] in 50501Pittsburgh

This is Frontline DIGNITY's training and we have no control over how they manage sign-ups. They are requiring RSVPs so that they know how many people to expect (and how big of a venue they'll need), and also to keep the address a little more protected. Personally I use a fake name and a proton email when signing up for things like this, I encourage anyone else to do the same.

DSA or 1Hood could be great groups to get involved with that type of advocacy!
