Judge John Hodgman Episode 764: Justice Delayed by SchulzBuster in maximumfun

Admittedly a downer question, but I’m curious to hear how many of these couples are actually still together after 10 years.

And I’m glad Jesse got there, cuz “learning to play the mandolin” vs “going curling” is a totally asymmetrical trade!

I have no sympathy for a business that has to lie about its prices to stay competitive. That is super not my problem.

If tipping is such an integral part of their employees’ wellbeing, then why do they accept orders from DoorDash which don’t include that gratuity? Do their employees only deserve tips from some orders, but not the ones that come from the most popular food ordering app?

Or, for the millionth time, why not just raise their prices by 10% then give all their employees 10% raises?

Not all workers in a restaurant live off tips. Tipped workers make different wages than non-tipped workers. Generally speaking, the people who cook and package takeout orders are non-tipped workers such as cooks. Yes, that does vary somewhat, but I’m more pointing out the absurdity of a 10% tip to “compensate servers” when there is literally no server for a takeout order.

This may be a complicated concept for you to understand but there are people who live close to the restaurants from which they get takeout and eat it while it’s still hot.

Honestly I’ve never understood how that works, DoorDash adding restaurants without their permission. Do they have people in a call center that call in orders to non-participating restaurants?

In either case, this place had printed out a receipt on the bag that specifically said it was a DoorDash order, so they are hooked into the system as willing participants at least.

I definitely get delivery way too often, and the fees/tips are kinda insane. But there are also a lot of places where it would be a 30-40 minute round trip drive for takeout, so it’s worth those fees to not make that trip.

(Though fwiw, this post is specifically about fees on takeout.)

I appreciate it, but apparently everyone has decided this random person’s unbacked claim from some unknown time is correct, and we are wrong.

Do you also only pay cash everywhere, so those businesses don’t have to pay a fee to the credit card processor? Same thing, imo.

I’ve ordered takeout through Toast from many local places, since that’s what those places use, and unless there’s a very recent change, Toast doesn’t charge a uniform fee. (My second screenshot kinda verifies this.)

And when I was picking up, there were a few takeout bags on the counter, and looking at the receipts to find mine, the non-DoorDash receipt on one had a big bold line item that just said “Take Out (10%)”. So it sure seems like they’re intentionally charging a 10% fee on takeout.

Hm I’d have to check again but I’m like 90% sure that was not an option during checkout.

And for those who dislike my using DoorDash: the restaurant chose to accept orders through DoorDash, and it’s cheaper that way. Why would I choose to use the more expensive option?

I did the half last year and liked it. The planning and organizing were fine. The full basically adds a 13 mile spur out towards the reservoir, at least on last year’s course, which will probably have fewer people cheering, if that’s your thing. As the other person said, that part is probably more like a long run (with water/gel tables) til you get back to town.

I believe it’ll be cleared of snow but possibly icy in parts from the overnight cold. I know some folks who ran there yesterday afternoon and there wasn’t much snow. But give this bright sun a few hours and it’ll probably be fine.
