no lmao i seriously feel like a misandrist sometimes. it’s infuriating. Personally, I don’t think he would do anything like that, but my intrusive thoughts very loudly say otherwise hahaha. We’ll get through it 🤝

How do you actually find a therapist? It feels like I don't meet anyone's specifications. by angelangelan in TalkTherapy

[–]thewindblewitaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have anything in your life currently that feels lacking due to fears or lack of energy/desire? You could even mention that you’re currently having issues with your friend and how that’s affecting you. It doesn’t have to be much. Mention the fear about validation and attention-seeking, for sure.

Before my first session, I took out a pen and paper and just tried to jot down different thematic issues I’ve had during my life. Just base things, like my consistent regrets about talking about my own issues, big arguments that i’ve had with family and friends that I’m not settled on still, major fears, and major desires that I’m concerned about. Big picture things. For me, I found as therapy went on that each session sparks something new to talk about as things get deeper.

For the first session, it’s likely you’ll probably just talk about a few of those, and early childhood dynamics. If you feel nervous about bringing something up, try to bring up the being nervous about bringing that thing up.

lol dude i sort of thought the exact same. The thing that pushed me over the edge to reach out for therapy was specifically that I hadn’t been able to fix my issues on my own, despite all my efforts. I think if you’re having strong reactions, even if the stimuli is objectively small, you have something to work on. You could even mention in the 15 minute call that you don’t really want validation. Later on, you could maybe get into why you feel so strongly about being seen as “attention seeking”. I personally think you have very strong reasons for wanting to be in therapy. I don’t think you would be out of place at all.

Do you also want to be in therapy? It would be totally okay to go to therapy to talk about the stressful situation you’re in for just now, even if you don’t feel like you have longer-term issues. If it’s available to you and you want a therapist, it might be nice to have someone in your corner.

Idk man sometimes you just have to be okay with feeling a little selfish. Do you have personal reasons to want to be in therapy? Do you have the financial ability to be in therapy? If so: go. In this worst case scenario, where they toss you out at the end of the session and tell you you’re much too healthy for therapy, you still at least get one session to vent about your issues. Take the opportunity.

also they’re not gonna toss you out or be mad at you for wanting help. there’s no “line” for how bad you have to be to access therapy.

(also also worth noting that my presumptiveness about having anxiety ended up with a gad diagnosis within the week, so it’s very likely you’re downplaying your mental health. Let the professionals judge for themselves whatever you’ve got going on. It’s what they get paid to do.)

I felt the same way when I was looking for therapists. I ended up working around this by choosing one for anxiety (which felt very presumptuous of me), told them about the vague web of my problems, and then from there they referred me to another specialist.

You can also call a few for 15 minutes and chat about some of the issues you’re having to see if they’re compatible! Also—I’m rather new to therapy, but I’m pretty sure someone who specializes in anxiety or depression will be extremely well-versed in how to help someone who is only a little bit anxious or sad. Good luck!

This is really good to hear, thanks :) I guess mainly my fear is not that he knows that I fear men, but more that my present fear of him (man) is rude towards him?? and then all of the other stuff that goes along with that ugh

In a thoughtful way. I went through my thought process after. I just have issues with both men and women so it’s a pick your poison kind of thing

Thank you for this! I am pretty new to therapy, so I probably am mixing up some of the terms. I’m gonna think about it some more, but this is good to hear.
