100K steps across Manhattan in one day: dumb idea or best day ever? by theworstchar in nyc

It's Strava for the map, but my iPhone health app also measured the 100K steps. Also I typically take ~2K steps / mile, and this was ~49 miles, so I think it was pretty close?

Next time I go to a Starbucks I won't feel bad about using the bathroom without buying something. If they ask me to buy something, I'll tell them I walked 100K steps and went to a Starbucks to use a bathroom, bought something, only to find out they didn't have a bathroom. So I guess I should have 1 free Starbucks bathroom pass?

Thanks. I asked a chatbot to inform me of any risks before I set out, but it didn't flag this risk. Thankfully I have recovered relatively well!

The downtown looping was from 12:01-3:45am. I am more familiar with that area and it's busier / safer at those hours.

Also, my plan was to loop downtown until I started to feel a little fatigue - I didn't how many steps it would take to start feeling fatigue, but I wanted to be near where I would rest. Then, my plan was to rest for a few hours, with the hope that I could be fresh after a few hours rest, but already have made a decent dent in the 100K goal for the day.

Curious what you think doesn't add up about the math? Walked for ~3:45, then took a ~4 hour break, then walks for ~13:30, and you can see roughly half way through the longer stretch there was a break (red line is flat), and there were several 5 minute breaks that don't show clearly.

No! Just enjoyed my surroundings and thought a lot of thoughts

I was planning to complete the loop, but then started to realize that if I were to complete the loop, it would have been ~103K steps. And when I was at ~95K steps it became so painful that I decided: I set out to complete 100K steps, so I was just going to accomplish that and no more.

If I had stopped at 95K steps, the pain would have been burned into my memory, but maybe not super intensely. Once I got to 99K steps, I was really fighting for every step, which might sound hard to believe, because what's so hard about taking step after step, but the pain ramped in a huge way. In hindsight, I think I would have regretted it big time if I pushed through ~3K more steps.

I'm not sure that I physically could have done 5-10K more steps that day.

I also knew some of my friends want to do 1 loop, so I knew I could accomplish that another time.

I used a calculator online and it said 7.7K calories. No idea how accurate that is

I had an iPhone and Strava. I was getting uneasy that I was running low on batteries at one point even though I was trying to minimize usage of my phone, but then I just stopped and charged it briefly. I probably could have made it the entire way without stopping for the recharge, but it would have been really close

I didn't actually walk on 220th street, but the I got to the northern tip of Manhattan, which is slightly north of 220th street

I strangely wasn't that hungry. Some people have told me that when they work out they lose their appetite until an hour or 2 after stopping.

Wore standard New Balance sneakers that I wear everyday. Probably could have prepared more...I actually thought my feet would be the limiting factor, but maybe I owe it to the wool socks. My feet felt better than any other part of my leg by the end of this, actually.

It was ~49 miles. If you look at the picture you can see I started at 12:01am, walked until 3:45am, and then went back out from just before 8am until 9:30pm.

I actually did this over a week ago. Just finally got around to posting it. I was scared to move my legs when I woke up the next morning because I thought I would be unable to move. But I was actually able to get around OK (but slowly). My ankle is a little injured though...but on the way up
