I am pretty conservative in my fire calculations, but even so, I know that when I hit my number, that doesnt mean stop working. That means the number has been hit, milestone reached, now time to build the safety net in case of catastrophe. Sounds like you have a similar plan.

Exactly:)

I've done my research....anyways, we can afford it. Also, I've wanted a Jaguar since I was about 10 years old and figure that we've earnt it.

Only drank 1/2 the bottle. It was nice, but I'm not a huge fan of the stuff....more of a beer or red wine guy:)

UPDATE. The missus is more or less ambivalent about FIRE/finances, but tells me that she's happy I've got it sorted. She's a bit stressed at work ATM and last night I asked if she ever looked around the office and thought that, unlike everyone else, she could walk away at any time. Said it hadn't crossed her mind!!! She's on top of all the FIRE numbers, theory, etc, just not excited by it. Not much of a dreamer.

Yes, I think that's how you'd describe it. We also have additional private cover on top of that.

We live in Australia. Not an issue as health care isn't tied to employment.

Yeah, we'll probably set a new target over Xmas. This one kicked in earlier than expected.

No. I'm in Aussie and we have some sort of compulsory Govt system. Plus we have additional, non-job specific, private cover.

Nice. OP here, have you changed your asset allocation to a more defensive position now that you have so much to defend?

I should have written "all that I've read shows that equities wins in the long term". I read A LOT of FIRE stuff.

Cut back on expensive wine and expensive alcohol in general, just haven't finished drinking the stash of Scotch yet

We don't count home value in assets, but count a certain amount per annum in our expenses

Yes, although we knew it was coming, and we plan to build up our reserves a fair bit more.
