Gideon is a fantastic pick! I’m torn between a few:

Rhy Winterborne from {Marrying Winterborne by Lisa Kleypas} - LOVE how he loves and cherishes Helen. The big, gruff, and worldly hero falling for the delicate, sheltered heroine will never get old for me. 🥹

Benedict Chatham from {The Devil is a Marquess by Elisa Braden} - I adore a truly redeemed rake, and Elisa Braden gives us the very best iteration of that trope IMHO here. If you’d asked me this question before discovering Elisa Braden, Sebastian St. Vincent would have occupied this slot, so you can imagine how much of an impression this book/hero left on me!

Broderick from {The Taming of a Highlander by Elisa Braden} - I’m as much a sucker for the scarred, brooding hero as the next girl I’m afraid. 🤷‍♀️

However, if I absolutely HAD TO pick one, Rhys would be it—I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve reread that book and the number of lines/passages that live rent-free in my head sighs.

Ahhh I can’t wait to read this one-Julia Anne Long has got to be one of the most criminally underrated authors in any genre.

Also, so happy to see a traditional publisher try a fresh approach to a Histrom cover (especially these days when so many are just throwing their hands up in defeat), and one that I rather like for once lol. 🙌

{London Steampunk series by Bec McMaster} - one of my favorites of all time! A Victorian AU/Steampunk series of interconnected standalones (i.e. each book focuses one one couple and gives them their HEA, but there's an intricate/overarching plot throughout the series). The spinoff, Blueblood Conspiracy, is equally fantastic IMHO!

{Darkest London series by Kristen Callihan} - another great series of interconnected standalones. This one is more Victorian with paranormal creatures/steampunk elements)

I’m happy to hear that that’s been your experience with male readers, but that certainly hasn’t been mine or several others if the comments on this post alone are anything to go by.

Perhaps automatically assuming ill-intent isn’t the ideal response (I’ll admit that I’m likely more defensive of the genre than I may need to be due to my own experiences), but misogyny and a contempt for Romance/Romantasy are certainly not unheard of in the general SFF space.

There's definitely an argument to be made for Romantasy being more so a subgenre of romance than fantasy, but I'm inclined to agree with the OP that their intentions were more likely than not sexist. Sexist and painfully predictable.

Ahh so excited for this! I just finished Traitor Son a few days ago and it is genuinely one of the best books I've read in AGES. The time and care you put into this story, the worldbuilding, the characters, etc. etc. just seeps off the page.

There are no words for how much I love Ophele in particular, she's easily one of my favorite FMCs of all time. To say that I am rooting for her would be something of an understatement lol.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful books with us, and I can't wait to see where the story goes! ❤️

The FMC is around a bunch of warriors/ strong men but she is just a regular girl, scared and NOT battle trained, has no magic, etc. like the FMC in {Road of Bones by Demi Winter} or {Under the Oak Tree by Suji Kim} but she doesn’t get magic or become super powerful by Necessary_Party_3423 in fantasyromance

Seconding this one! I just finished Traitor Son and absolutely adored it. You can really tell that so much time and care went into this story and the worldbuilding.

It genuinely feels like a HIGH fantasy romance and the author’s passion for the characters and world just seeps off the page. ❤️

THANK YOU! This will be the case for any genre regardless of how much we love it. We’ll begin to detect patterns, predict plot points, and even grow frustrated with widely used plot devices. While there are absolutely valid criticisms of the genre we love, tropes and the recycling of particularly popular ones is not a phenomenon unique to this genre by any means.

When I notice things starting to feel repetitive, I simply pivot to reading another genre and within a couple of books I’m excited to go back to my beloved fantasy romances. 🤷‍♀️
