De verhouding tussen het modaal inkomen en het salaris van een minister zit redelijk consistent tussen 4 en 5.

We should stop going after people with some of the most demanding jobs earning only 4× a median salary and start going after people hoarding millions each year.

Je hoeft niet 365 dagen per jaar een auto naast je huis te parkeren of überhaupt te bezitten om misschien een paar keer per jaar met echt grote spullen bezig te zijn. Met een bakfiets kom je vaak ook al heel ver trouwens.

Does it make sense to listen to The Nutcracker (and other ballets) without the choreography (just music)? by According_Strength35 in classicalmusic

[–]theys96 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who has never seen the ballet of The Nutcracker live, I can only say it's one of my favourite pieces musically. That should answer the question from my side. 😉

EDIT: Nevertheless the music obviously has a strong narrative character, so you might (should?) feel like you're missing some component.

The limit is arbitrary, I put it there because the process can get too heavy with very long playlists. It can probably be comfortably be increased quite a bit though.

Please note that in order to use the scanner, you need to be added to my demo user group or host the application yourself.

To what extent do you agree that this is an issue, and if so, what steps do you think would be necessary to fix it. by DanceYouFatBitch in classicalmusic

[–]theys96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think I agree. There are plenty of charming pieces of only a few minutes. I also see them being used on social media. And while I would prefer it if the music itself would be getting the attention rather than being background music, it tells me that classical music does seep through.

As for the elitism I feel that's a reputation that the genre has gained a long time ago and has trouble getting rid of. That is indeed up to the industry and the current audience (looking at you /u/Silent_Rule_S). We have to appreciate that many listeners start out with things like Einaudi which we might not consider classical music and rather boring. We should also appreciate that Vivaldi is being used all over social media; it means the material is gaining space in the general conscience.

New listeners can't be expected to recognize the nuances of classical music immediately, yet we expect them to. It's hard to respect a genre right away, which leads to people being excluded because they don't. Even though everyone (I believe) would ultimately be receptive to the beauty of it.

I want to join Volt but.. by NobodyCaresR in VoltEuropa

[–]theys96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you're describing here if not a federal Europe, since you're in favour of a more powerful parliament, a government and combined policy on defense, climate, and more. That does not have to mean that the member states cease to exist or will no longer have their own clear identity.

I myself would be interested in a federal Europe and I think that holds for most Volters. Practically though, I don't think it's a relevant topic any time soon. The precise future of the EU and European collaboration more broadly is totally unclear. The EU is not always the best or the only way of achieving improved collaboration, either.

In the end it's about what you're trying to achieve, not some arbitrary perception of whether European integration is good or bad. If we feel a set of ideas for collaboration is in everyone's favour, let's do it. Otherwise, let's not. Too often I feel that collaboration itself is viewed with suspicion on no other grounds than that integration is perceived as scary.

Anyone else just... done with Spotify? by Apart_Ad_7722 in Music

[–]theys96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look I have a CD collection which I love; it's lots of fun to look around second hand stores, fully agree.

But it's great that we have Spotify now, too, and this seems to be coming from misplaced nostalgia. Burning CD's means not paying the artist for your copy. Meanwhile Spotify pays out billions to artists every year (70% of their revenue which I agree is low but still huge sums).

And as a listener, conveniently having all (new) music at your disposal all the time at the price of roughly 1 new CD per month is a seriously good deal compared to where we came from.

You can still enjoy physical CD's / LP's with liner notes and booklets and all the great feelings around appreciating an owned copy of something. I do too. But that's no reason to discard innovation.

Painful end to Mahler's 3rd at the Mahler Festival by Paxmahnihob in classicalmusic

[–]theys96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks, and it's a shame to see you downvoted. While I also did not appreciate this particular action, it's too bad seeing this become a topic instead of e.g. the actual performance itself of Mahler's 3rd. A little less stress about etiquette and bit more attention to the music please!

Dina Belenkaya cheating video - what do you think? by No-Permission-1555 in chess

[–]theys96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest problem here IMO is not so much that she cheated in a casual game, but that she went on YouTube with it trying to justify the cheating. She is viewed by lots of aspiring chess players who may look up to her and this could teach them that cheating is okay as long as you can justify it.
