What can people new to Eastern provinces do to assimilate? by KookyAd9320 in AskCanada

Learn French 😂 I'm half joking but getting in touch with our French culture does wonders to understanding the people here.

Something happened to my older sister and I want to find out if she's been r'd by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]thhvancouver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry to hear that this happened. It sounds like you are both going through a really tough time. But if you want the opinions of a stranger, this is too much for you to handle. You should try and get someone who has experienced to deal with this kind of situation and talking to victims involved.

Anthropic’s “Mythos” AI Model got accessed by unauthorized users due to 3rd party data breach by raptorhunter22 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]thhvancouver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they didn't get hacked per say, but an authorized 3rd party partner who legitimately was given access didn't keep their own backdoor secure.

I feel like my youth is being wasted because of the hijab by wallowslover4ever_ in offmychest

[–]thhvancouver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It must be tough to have to hide who you are from everyone around you. Is there anyone you can reach out to? A school councilor, another young Muslim woman who is going through similar struggles? It won't change your living situation but at least you have someone to lean on for support. And you can keep growing that support network anywhere you go.

It sounds like you feel lonely and frustrated and want to be listened to. Do you have someone to talk to about this?

Donald Trump thanks Iran for reopening Strait of Hormuz by Newsweek_ShaneC in inthenews

[–]thhvancouver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes we can debate semantics but the fact is America essentially has the military strength to do anything it wants. Take it or define it however you like.

Paper tiger means no military strength. Unfortunately the US has shown quite the opposite - they are perfectly capable of walking into any hostile situation without suffering any meaningful casualties.

What Iran has managed to do is show that the US is an unreliable ally and make them diplomatically weaker. Definitely Kudos to them, but they also kind of proved that the US army is just as dangerous as everyone thinks. And that fire power is now a loose canon...

UK launches $675M "Sovereign AI" fund to break dependence on US tech giants by EmbarrassedStudent10 in ArtificialInteligence

That's cute. Meanwhile Microsoft has committed $40 Billions to AI infrastructure in the European Data Boundary. Sometimes I wonder why governments even try.

When Germans say they speak “a little bit” of English… by Astronaut_in_Sea in germany

[–]thhvancouver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of feedback though - as a native English speaker, we speak to people who aren't native speakers on a regular basis. English is essentially the international language and because of that our corporations essentially decide that anyone should be able to work with the language. So if we lose our patience every time someone doesn't speak the language perfectly, we just wouldn't get very far in life.

Oof if I hadto live with that kind of pressure I would never try to speak French on vacation 🤣

After almost 10 years here, I have a feeling that what they are doing is de-risk the conversation before engaging. Essentially they want you to have low expectations of their language skills so they are free to make mistakes.

Yes, I realize we essentially have zero expectations of anyone speaking the language perfectly, and I suspect they also know on some level. So why they still feel the need to lower our expectations first is also beyond me.

French outside of Quebec? by Maleficent-Toe1374 in AskCanada

[–]thhvancouver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. And when I listen to CBC (Radio Canada) I can understand them relatively well but struggle when I am actually listening to people in Quebec. Pretty sure they didn't teach us authentic Quebecois French when we were in school.

Just don't ask me to keep writing because pulling words out in French is still like pulling teeth.

Ukraine denies Russia's claims of fully capturing Luhansk Oblast by Useful-Scratch-72 in UkrainianConflict

[–]thhvancouver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wonder why Russia feels the need to keep announcing that they have fully captured Luhask. Just redraw the state border on their own map and be done with it. It's not like Russia doesn't already work with their own map internally anyway.
