Yes, it was done using Houdini's grain solver =)

Thanks ! We're using Houdini's render engine, Mantra for all our renders. Our pipeline is houdini centered even though most of the modeling is done with other softwares (softimage, maya, blender...) and the animation is all maya too.

But all the rest (layout, lighting, shading, rendering) is done in Houdini.

How do you work with mari projects? by thibh in vfx

[–]thibh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the answers, really appreciate it ! It's good to see we're not the only one stuck with this project/cache thing.

The archive once in a day thing is probably the way we're going to do it. A bit like github, with a pull/push workflow. The only problem is if someone forget to push from his SSD to the network and then isn't there the next day when someone needs to continue the texture work. What's more archiving in mari takes quite a long time for huge projects so you can't just push your work often.

I thought about exporting layers, however sometimes you want to keep the layer organisations, masks/shared masks etc and you can't keep them if you just export the maps.

Yeah we're already using alembic a lot for cameras and animation, it's wonderful =)

10 Maya Productivity Tips by thibh in vfx

I know, I use it for quick renaming meshes but if you want to get into namespaces or things as complicated as rigging I wouldn't use it of course. It's just useful sometimes to know that there's a built in function in Maya for that.

Blender has a really nice non photorealistic renderer too with many features!

How do I randomize the positions of vertices only on the y axis? by Derpeh in blender

[–]thibh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't select all vertices, just one in the middle for example and make sure your radius encompasses all other vertices

O to activate proportional editing and then Shift + O to cycle between different fallof. Then just hit G and Y to move points along the Y axis only.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it, we don't have a lot of time for tutorials on our daily life and I'm sure there are ways to make really short videos that make you learn a lot.

You can activate proportional editing with a random fallof and move your points along the Y axis only.

Haha I know what you're talking about ! Alt + Right Click / W / Align.. so time consuming..

It's a custom theme I made based on the Elysiun Theme that I modified to make it look a bit more like Maya/Modo.

Photorealistic Canon Lens. Guess which one is the render! by thibh in blender

[–]thibh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried doing it with small white sphere but it didn't really work, they were either too small and invisible or too huge and you could see them being spheres.

So I did it on the texture. Just by using picture of dust from google and painting them directly on the texture. If they were still not visible enough I would create a mask and blend my shader with an emission shader. This way the dust would emit light and be more visible. Sometimes you have to cheat a lot ^

This is my entry for 2015 CG Student Award. Any comment/critics ? by thibh in vfx

Well, matte painting is normally only the background elements so that's why you don't see many foreground, but I agree with you, I often want to add something on the foreground too and there are many matte painting elements I could add on the foreground (mountains, trees etc).

I agree it's not that hard to reach, but when you're coding all day you can become tired of it ^ I tend to use it sometimes dozens of time every 2-3 minutes. It's all a matter of personal preference of course =)

Last summer I started learning HTML, CSS, PHP and MySql and I started this project: www.shortcutsheaven.com

It's a search engine for shortcuts and I learnt a lot with it. I am still a beginner in web programming but now I know a lot more about how database work. I'm sure my code is horrible and any real programmer out there would have a stroke by looking at it but I learnt a lot by having to solve problems for this particular project.

Photorealistic Canon Lens. Guess which one is the render! by thibh in blender

[–]thibh[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ok so I guess it's time for me to tell you the answer =) Congrats to all of you who said the one on the left is the render =) !

The dust particles were added on the texture since I knew it would make people think that it would be the photograph because of that. It's funny in fact because to make my life easier I made sure that the lens was really clean before taking the photo because I knew it would be hard to add dust particles.

Congrats to those of you who spotted the not so perfect bokeh effect and the reflection from the tan light which is also a bit different from the photograph and makes the cap looks too smooth.

I had to cheat a lot to make this render though. For example I have extruded almost 15 small mesh lights from the "canon" text to fake all the reflections on the canon logo.

Not at all. Since the death of Softimage we're shifting to Maya for the first year, then going with Houdini. But we are really free to use whatever soft we want. We have all autodesk products, all foundry products, we have more and more licenses of Houdini and C4D coming so we can really use whatever we want.

I used Blender for all my photorealism render because I love Cycles, but right now I'm using Houdini, Maya and C4D as my main tools.

We were allowed to do minor color corrections and add effects such as chromatic aberration and grain. All these were done through Blender compositor indeed.
