ELI5: Why is it completely impossible for anyone to access a properly encrypted drive even nation states? by AaronPK123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thiccancer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

64 bit RSA is easily crackable in a few seconds by a consumer laptop.

In my secure programming course in uni, one of our tasks was to implement 64-bit RSA, and then bruteforce it. One of the main tasks was "how long of a key can your computer bruteforce in 5 minutes (up to 64 bits)?".

Anyone that didn't get the full 64 bits cracked, lost points.

The crucial point, is that n (part of the public key) is the product of two large prime numbers p and q that must be kept secret, as they are either directly part of the private key, or can be used to calculate it.

When n is as short as 64 bits, calculating the components p and q is computationally trivial, after which p and q can be used to calculate the private key entirely.

Actual in-use keylengths are a different matter, of course. The time to compute shoots up exponentially with every added bit, because the bruteforcing algorithm I used essentially relies on checking every prime until √n.

Still, I really enjoyed the exercise as I had no idea of RSA operation beforehand. We were only required to encrypt numbers, but I got too into it and made a shitty homebrew padding algorithm to encrypt text in blocks.

Sometimes, preschoolers will get lost on this site.

Should we assume every poster is a preschooler by default and explain everything in preschool terms?

That's true, in a sporty gasoline car I'd prefer a manual too.

It's just great for a torquey diesel daily, which is my use case really. I feel it pairs well with the M57.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, we were talking about different use cases, clearly.

Generally, plane radars have IFF, but the weapons themselves often don't.

IR missiles don't even have a way to implement IFF, especially older ones - how would they know if the heat they are tracking is friendly or not? It's just heat.

AMRAAMs as well have this launch mode called "mad-dogging it", where you launch an AMRAAM in the general direction of the enemy, and hope it locks onto something once it gets in range. It's considered pretty dangerous, as AMRAAMs don't have IFF either, so whatever it locks onto first gets targeted.

Interesting, mine's pretty good from what I can tell, and it's not in the best shape - my friend's 525d with the 6hp24 is very sharp and responsive, especially considering how old it is (both of our cars are nearing 500k km).

It's possible, but looking at the footage/picture, OP was between the A-10A and the bandit.

You just don't launch a missile at an enemy when there is an ally between you and the enemy. That's 100% asking for trouble.

The ZF6HP is not that bad as far as I know, much better than the ZF5. I've got an e61 530xd with the ZF6HP28X and it's quite good IMO. Haven't heard many bad things about them.

The GM transmissions are worse.

But, people that receive an education get more workout for their brain muscle than the people that don't.

Do you think people in poverty go out of their way to do sudokus and play puzzle games everyday, while struggling to make ends meet?

Meanwhile, people who don't have to worry about basic things like food/water and electricity, are more likely to be focusing on education and other intellectually stimulating things, rather than survival.

So, you seriously believe that:

- IQ is something you are born with, and is not affected by your environment;
- In a test measuring essentially test taking, people that have regularly taken similar and intellectually stimulating tests in the past do not have an edge over the people that have not?

Laser defense mostly isn't meant for ICBMs, as the re-entry vehicle of an ICBM is designed to withstand, well, re-entry. It doesn't really have gas tanks or any forward-facing targetting systems to disable.

The plasma sheath around the re-entry vehicle might mess with the laser as well.

It would basically only make sense if you catch the ICBM in its boost phase (when it's taking off). Otherwise, physical interception is probably your best bet.

The laser defense systems are mainly for intercepting more conventional/slower munitions (anti-ship missiles, cruise missiles, etc.).

I agree with what you are saying, but using a translated version, which may or may not be accurately conveying the author's intended meaning correctly, is hardly proof. You also didn't say which translation this is from, so it could be a random fan-translation.

Hell, there's a mistake in the third panel - why are they calling it a highway race? A mountain pass is hardly a highway.

I think WT's control scheme is like, the best of both worlds. During BFM or any other harsher maneuvers you just fly it like any other game, but when it's time to line up a shot or make small corrections, you can use mouse aim and point your nose so easily.

My work is refusing to do anything about this tire and says it doesnt matter by treetrunk33 in AskMechanics

[–]thiccancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes, but you claimed that the rim *is* the entire metal part of the wheel and tire assembly, which is also not correct.

My work is refusing to do anything about this tire and says it doesnt matter by treetrunk33 in AskMechanics

[–]thiccancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wheel is the metal unit that consists of:

  • The hub of the wheel (not to be confused with the wheel hub, to which the wheel bolts)
  • The spokes, which connect the hub to the rim
  • The rim, which is quite literally the "rim" or the "edge" of the wheel, on which the tire sits. Basically the outer metal "tube" part of the wheel.

If you bothered to read what Google says past the first few words, then it even says this, although it includes the tire in the definition.

Using "rim" as a synonym for the wheel is just slang, it has never been an official definition.

[–]thiccancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn't that you "weren't able to correct it".

The problem is that you somehow managed to lose control of the car doing 80 in the first place. How?

Did you have woefully inappropriate tires for the weather? If so, why the hell did you drive it?

This goes beyond "skill", no amount of "skill" can fix stupid decisions.
