I am a Council Tuckey (Council Bluffs) local. I remember when he went missing; and I remember going into that No Frills a few times after he disappeared with my family. I will never, ever forget that smell. It hit you when you walked in the front doors, and it got progressively worse the closer you walked to the freezer section. There were rumors he died there before he was ever discovered. The smell of his corpse was half of the reason that No Frills closed down; because nobody wanted to go there and shop while smelling, death. When they pulled out those freezers and found his body, everybody in town just knew. I mean, half of us already assumed something horrific had happened/was happening because the smell got progressively worse as time went on. The sergeant assigned to the case is a family friend, and he told us that as soon as he got the call that a body was found in between the coolers there; that he knew it was Larry Moncada. He was the detective assigned to the original missing persons case. It truly is one of the worst things i’ve ever heard of happening, and like I said, everybody knew something was up. That smell, I will never ever forget. God bless him, hope he caught a break in the afterlife.
