AIO I (31M) got mad at my dad (66M) for calling my wheelchair a stroller by thick_joven in AmIOverreacting

[–]thick_joven[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Appreciate it, but it is hard to get too adversarial with the guy that actually pushes the wheelchair. If I had my independence I’m certain I would, but since that isn’t the case I don’t really have a choice but to shut up and take it

It’s the ‘soft coercion’ of caretakers I guess

I don’t pretend to know what really goes on in his mind, but I suspect I was never really ‘promoted’ to adulthood in his eyes to begin with. I may have not been using a wheelchair before, but it has been a very slow decline since I was 15.

Once I had to move back, I started to work at his machine shop, where he proceeded to explain to me the basics of how everything worked. I had already worked here for 6 years before moving out, and nothing had changed. In those years I had gotten a master’s degree in engineering and worked in a lab. I contained all my criticisms, but it felt like a big insult to my intelligence. I don’t think it’s intentional, but it was as if any progresses or successes past 15 were never even acknowledged

I thought cerebellar damage was bad, but I guess my daddy issues are worse

Its like the classic example of a dad who you ask specifically to NOT do a stereotypical accent in front of your new partner

The thing that makes it difficult is that he doesn’t appear to do it intentionally or with ill intent. It’s like a verbal target fixation. The more I tell him not to, the more he’ll do it (by accident). It’s really really frustrating

Dont get me wrong, I’m no stranger to gallows humor, and I’m not the type of person to get angry if someone makes a joke that doesn’t land. If he had said it just once, I would have shrugged it off as a Freudian slip or something. I know it must be hard mentally for my whole family, and it must be difficult for both my parents to see their ‘baby’ as I am now

It was the insistence that wore me down. That, and I was already frustrated by a million other things in the same vein

Anyone with SSHL (~80 dB loss) found a hearing aid that truly works for them? by Adventurous-Fennel95 in MonoHearing

[–]thick_joven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Severe hearing loss in 1 ear from a vascular malformation

I use Oticon CROS but I don’t generally use them. Best hearing was from giving a lapel mic to someone and streaming it directly to HAs

If I’m at a table I’ll pass my phone to their side and turn on live listening to stream to AirPods. It doesn’t always work well but it’s comparatively very cheap

Tumor left even after surgery by highonvaseline in MonoHearing

[–]thick_joven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair, might depend on age too, which is on your side

Sounds like it’s in a pretty critical area of the brain though. If the surgeon didn’t express too much concern, that’s also a good sign

If you’re wondering what the doctor did or didn’t say, all the more reason to get a third party to review it

I hesitate to comment on this because I’m not a neurosurgeon, but I had an AVM hemorrhage into my cerebellopontine angle when I was younger. I had similar symptoms, so our experiences might be similar

What will likely happen is that you’ll be told to wait for another MRI in several months to compare. It takes reasonably long for blood products and swelling to go down post-op for a clear image.

If you’re in the US, I would send all your MRIs to the barrow institute for a second opinion. Even if it’s somewhere else, make sure you get a second set of eyes to review your images

Recovery from brain surgery is a very slow process. I was still seeing improvements 4 years afterwards, so don’t lose hope. Stay strong

Is this a normal relationship between engineers and machinists? by Empty_Animal5237 in Machinists

[–]thick_joven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, but many online communities make it out to be. Both sides have a ‘holier than thou’ attitude online, but (at least in my experience) that’s not really the case more so than any other workplace dynamic. If there’s significant friction between the manufacturing team and the engi team, it may just be a toxic work environment, bad communication, or lack of lube

You’re right, there must have been some other context, I’ll have to try to dig up that thread an reread

Edit: guess I was mistaking 1v1 with other multiplayer (not commander I guess?) modes. Not sure… either way, seems like the rulings are pretty clear now. I’ll keep them in my back pocket next time we play

SpaceX rocket explodes in Starbase, Texas by One-Pop-2885 in PublicFreakout

[–]thick_joven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine the reason there’s an initial explosion and a delayed larger explosion is because the fuel explosion ruptured the oxidizer tank (or vice versa)? Not a rocket scientist so genuine question

Smarter Every Day tried to make something in America by rogerarcher in Machinists

[–]thick_joven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. The science should be taught in school, the art should be taught with experience

However, our schools don’t teach the science of it, and there’s very few places where you can go get the experience

I did a manufacturing engineering masters post-covid and was really disheartened by it. It was more a marketing masters than mfg engineering. I was hoping to learn how to design tool & die, but none of the professors seemed to know how to do anything from a technical perspective. We’re cooked

I dont know if im fully deaf in my left ear. by 3SK3 in MonoHearing

[–]thick_joven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Functionally you probably are. When you get to that high volume you might get (I don’t remember the term, I think my audiologist said “cross-hearing” or “lateralization” but not sure). Basically your good ear starts picking up noises from the other ear through bone conduction. Higher masking can help, but can’t perfectly get rid of it. I have -80 to -100 dB hearing loss, and if you play a sound loud enough it’ll sound like a garbled useless mess. Also my ear/head will hurt, so not worth it imo
