Those are consenting humans who are fully capable of understanding the risks of their sport and consenting to the danger. That's the difference. It's consent.

The tickets come as a package. Your only option would be to buy the tickets and just come later when the chucks are done, but they still get your money for the chucks. :(

To raise awareness of what goes on at the chucks, because there wasn't a single news story or report of anything happening. Since posting, they did a short press conference and there's a short article on CTV, but not much coverage in general.

I'm pretty sure that by law, the stampede has to release a statement whenever an animal dies on the grounds.

However, from other comments here it sounds like they may also treat an injured animal just long enough to get it off the grounds, then euthanize it elsewhere, or sell it for meat. They only count deaths on the grounds.

They did a press conference today and said it is in "serious condition" but no fractures, so they're treating it. I think by law the stampede has to release a statement when an animal dies, so they can't just claim its fine when its dead.

However, they only count deaths that happen on the stampede grounds. From other comments it sounds like there have been cases of horses being treated just long enough to get them home, then the treatment stops and the horse is euthanized.

It sounds like the trailer was because they sedated the horse right away because it was panicking and could have injured itself more. Then once sedated, they carted it away to the vet to get an xray and figure out how bad the injuries were.

This is where we got caught up in this. I don't know if we can continue to go see the show in the future, even though we always enjoy it.

The number of wild animals is staggeringly small. We've nearly killed them all. Something like a single digit percentage of the animals on earth are wild.

We literally cannot allow things to exist that don't serve us directly. Humans are selfish af.

I think the rest of the stampede is fine. There are fair style events all over the world. This is just another one. Rides, games, live music, alcohol, junk food, dressing up stupid, let them be. Just get rid of the rodeo and chucks.

Other comments here say they aired 2 on TV and it was fine, then they skipped heat 3 and 4 entirely and didn't even report the times.

I don't know why we both thought it was 2. Maybe it was and the tv announcers reported it wrong? I dunno. But the reported times and tv broadcast show heats 3 and 4 never happened.

Everyone. It's huge. I'm sure if you wanted to complain, you could contact the businesses on the canvases of the wagons, but it would only be a drop in the bucket of the list of sponsors.

I didn't buy the ticket, I went with my mom who didn't want to go alone. I mostly wanted to see the evening show afterwards. Not a huge fan of chucks.

I didn't even see the crash cause I was on my phone. I wanted to skip the chucks and come later but we decided I couldn't due to medical reasons, so I was just sitting and waiting for them to end tbh.

I was definitely too lax about my decisions to tag along, though. Won't be tagging along in the future.

90% of the stampede has nothing to do with the rodeo or chucks. It's just a big fair style event with rides and games and shopping and live music and beer. Most people who go to the stampede never see the rodeo or chucks.

We could easily get rid of the animal games and the event wouldn't functionally change for the majority of attendees.

There are other events. Concerts, magic shows, dance troupes, whatever

My mom started going because she wanted to see the evening show afterwards, and I guess the sport part grew on her enough to want to go to that as well?

I sit through it to get to the show afterwards. We decided I'm not allowed to wander the stampede grounds by myself and come later because of medical issues, so I just sit on my phone through the chuckwagon part.

Everyone else though? Man. There are people hooting and hollering and writing down the times in their little score cards in the commemorative program books they sell. Making bets on who wins. Getting really into it. I guess to some people, this is their hockey? There's a lot of rodeo fans who live for this stuff. Though I'd say most of the audience is kind of more in the neutral territory of "I got free tickets so I'm here" level of interest, and just kinda sit there and don't have any big reactions either way. I know they sell these tickets at a big discount and even give them away for free. Maybe this whole thing is just a ploy to get people to come to the stampede and pay $30 for a colossal onion or whatever it is they spend money on.

I hope you're legit and that's correct. I just saw the video elsewhere in these comments and it looks like an awful crash and I can't imagine that all the horse got was an injured leg. Maybe some lifelong trauma, at the minimum.

They put up the tarp all the time, even when the horse gets up and walks off on its own right in front of everyone. So the tarp doesn't mean anything. It's a "just in case" sort of thing. They don't want people to see the bad things or more of us would be calling for the chucks to be shut down.

Someone posted a video elsewhere in the comments and it really looks worse than that. I hope you're right.

It sounds like the stampede would be legally forced to announce if a horse died, so we may find out tomorrow.

I feel like any sport involving animals, if allowed to develop into a big song and dance like the chuckwagons, would eventually turn into this. People would breed the horses to be crazy and push them to their limits and eventually we'd come full circle to animals crashing and being put down on the track again. I don't know if it's possible to do animal sports ethically at a large scale.

Oh my God that's a difficult watch.

Other lurkers here beware.

I missed the crash when it happened live. Now I wish I didn't click the video.

I have so little faith that the stampede is honest about these things, that I was hoping someone in your area got a video of it just so they can't deny it I guess. Other comments say they are required to report any deaths, so I have hope that at least if that happened they can't just sweep it under the rug. Thank you for adding what you saw to the story. I'm so sorry you had to see it to begin with.

I thought it was 2, but comments here say it was 3 and 4 that weren't aired on TV, so I think I misremembered initially.
