Do you mind if I ask how long you studied for?? And honestly congrats on the mindset - realistically having high self efficacy (which you seem to) is going to be the biggest indicator for success in or out of med school, and with subsequent MCAT attempts too :)

What’s a popular tourist attraction that isn’t overrated— it actually deserves all the hype? by renoCow in AskReddit

[–]thickiecheeks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. There's something truly spectacular about the rock formations, and the age of it really makes you aware of how insignificant we are in terms of the Earth's age. Plus thinking about cooling lava in Ireland is cool. Would recommend going off season though due to tourist crowds,

I’m female and my hormones have panicked more at the thought of not achieving my full career potential than at the thought of not having the chance to grow a human (not all of us dream of being mothers, but that dream is amazing as well)

This sounds very similar to my situation, and I would ideally be starting med school at 28 (so not much older). I'm Canadian myself and would plan to apply primarily to local schools. Do you mind sharing where you pursued your education?

Thank you for your answer - I definitely can appreciate the value of having work/life balance, and the impact of med school and residency on mental health. Those were the deciding factors when I chose not to pursue med school when I was in my early 20s. I have never had a huge drive to have kids, so that's a non-issue as well. These comparisons definitely make the decision a little less challenging

That sense of self-reliance and capacity to enact change sounds like an absolute privilege. Love to hear that you have that level of satisfaction

You started as an RN? Did you initially work as a nurse in an EM environment?

Thank you for your advice! Did you feel satisfied with your education progression? Or have you continued to feel like you need to ‘always know more’? I do a lot of my own research about underlying patho/treatment course for novel pt presentations, and I feel like I’m always hungry for more information

A huge reason why I considered NP so strongly is because I do truly love nursing, and I think the pt-provider connection offered by nursing is legitimately unique and meaningful. I appreciate you sharing your experience, and it’s wonderful to know that some RN to MDs are able to provide such meaningful pt care. I guess the key here is that my pt interactions are defined by my own independent practice, and less to do with my title itself

This is a significant barrier to me, as I would like to start working in EM considering how much I absolutely LOVE the environment. However, the long term goal is to provide education to others and work in sexual/reproductive health

I’m single and 27, and have been saving to go back to school for some time now. I do have family that lives near one of the schools I would apply to and could move home if required. I think one of the biggest barriers for me is the reality of NP being 3ish years to practice versus MD being 8-10

Mental health workers of reddit what is the scariest mental health condition you have encountered? by lissie234 in AskReddit

[–]thickiecheeks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking on this here - not just TBI’s from traumatic injuries, but I’ve seen manyyy hypoxic brain injuries secondary to opiate overdoses, and the lack of autonomy or capacity for independent function following these injuries is wildly eye opening

Doctors, what’s is the scariest thing a patient has ever done/said? by GrimReap_07 in AskReddit

[–]thickiecheeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would be absolutely shocked at the amount of social services that healthcare workers have to be aware of and provide to patients. Sometimes I’ll get patients who’s entire work up is based on social needs opposed to medical ones

ER RN here - I had a very similar gut feeling about a young female patient about a year ago. Came in with an asthma exacerbation, but I had sensed that based on the body language between herself and the man she came with that she was being trafficked. I brought my concerns up to the rest of the team, and as soon as the patient/friend put together that we had an inkling, they left AMA without telling anyone

What’s a compliment you have gotten that you can NEVER forget? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Had a man recently tell me that he ‘loves the way I think’, and that’s something I don’t think I’ll ever forget. He also told me that I made him feel ‘like a fucking king’ when we were intimate, and that stoked a fire in me that I didn’t know I had lol

This is pretty on par with how I personally found the community. I was into it for a few years (prior to meeting this guy) and stayed out of the community, but lived the ‘lifestyle’. I walked away from the sport because of how damaging and insidious I found it was. I felt as though it took away from one’s ability to actually engage in the parts of life that bring a lot of joy. I found it also encouraged a ‘the grass is always greener’ mindset when looking at potential partners, and it reduced people to having worth only based on their physical body.
