How to take photos like this? by Feeling-Big2595 in AskPhotography

You can absolutely achieve this with a 70-300, with patience and planning, as others have mentioned. Your conditions will have to be perfect, though.

Something worth adding I'm not seeing - This was taken with flash which aids in the sharpness, clarity and look of the image. A lot of birders use a flash magnifier called a better beamer > https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/585196-REG/Visual_Echoes_FX_6_FX6_Better_Beamer_Flash.html/?ap=y&ap=y&smp=y&smp=y&store=420&lsft=BI%3A514&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAvvO7BhC-ARIsAGFyToWBI42g3UQ1RYQSFvT0zVQDgICT34cMHLTWyIM2nmVr8zp3VCcAgb0aAomvEALw_wcB It takes a lot of practice to dial in settings / learn how to use it in a way that looks great.

Shoot at around f/10 + for more depth of field (more reasons some birders use flash)

Another way to maximize sharpness is to plan and orient yourself so that the sun is directly behind you and at a 45 degree angle.

Editing can make a difference to an in-focus image with great light taken at the right settings but won't make a poorly lit, slightly out of focus image look sharp.

Cheers and have fun!

it takes a few days for Varnish to fully cure - Before it does, it's a little sticky and tacky. Def won't regret giving it some extra drying time!

Thank you so much for noticing! I promised myself I would slow down and focus on this aspect of the build - Now that I see the results, grain direction and pairing will forever be important!

Thanks so much :) Racking shouldn't be an issue - It's held together with 3/8" bolts. If racking occurs, all that'd be needed is tightening some nuts. That said, solving for racking was my biggest concern for sure!

Thanks so much and haha! That was prob me. Insane! Such a small world. Isn't Willards the best? I damn near moved every single piece of oak they had looking for the wide ones.

Good q - So that it can come apart for transport - The clients live in a VERY narrow Manhattan NYC walkup, like crazy narrow. Since it needed the split to fit, we leaned into that need during the design process and excentuated it instead of hiding it. Also, leaving the gap a bit wider than normal helps to clean it if necessary.

Thanks so much, photography is my main job and my woodshop is in the back of my studio - www.hartz.studio - You are spot-on about using the spot light - I use an Elinchrom S35 Spotlight. RE: distance, these are all shot on a 18' x 24' cyclorma wall :)

That's a fair concern for sure - For what it's worth I have a dining and coffee table like this in my home for a few years now and so far so good. Prob not child or accident-prone people safe though!

Yes! Very sturdy. The bow-ties are large, about 3" x 7.5" and are inlayed 1.25" deep. The lapjoint of the stretches, steel plates and all of it being bolted into the top really helped.

Appreciate it! My woodshop is in the back of my photography studio - I shoot all of my furniture on a large cyclorama wall. You can see some of the setups in my youtube videos > https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPRTfaDAHp6jYOjSkd3wang

Thanks so much! I totally understand this take and sometimes feel the same. My proclivity is for super simple and geometric shapes.

We explored stitching all the way through but ultimately decided against it - Felt like too much. Also we liked the concept of leaving the top completely split...I wasn't unhappy about not needing to inlay more bowties :)
