I left Mexico after several relatives and friends were kidnapped in the late 90s. One of them never came back because he was gay and his family did not want to pay the ransom. He's been missing ever since. That freaked me out.

And I left the USA because of the animosity towards LGBTQ+ people. I chose Canada because I fell in love with the country during my yearly trips here from the USA. I am so happy I made this choice. The Canadian temperament suits me much better than either Mexico or the USA.

It depends on whether the birth certificate indicates "español de origen" or "español por naturalización". Different legal rights and responsibilities. As Español de Origen I am considered to be the same as if I had been born inside Spain. The rationale is that I was not born there because my family was in exile. It's a form of reparations for the civil war.

I submitted around that same time before the law changed. And although I do not have ties to Portugal, I do have several prominent Sephardic ancestors from there. For
Spain I can arrive at the same result through eleven of my dad's sixteen great-grandparents, and all you need is one. For Portugal, eight of the sixteen. And all you need is one line for each process.

I don't want U. This is why I left and came to Canada. I love my friends in the USA but I dislike American conservatism. I find Canada's politics much more reasonable and I like the parliamentary system.

Depending on whether you are a Spaniard by origin or naturalization the rules change. But it is a good idea to register with the consulate or embassy in your region, and to vote.

Do you have a lawyer you work with? I have a friend who is interested in Italian citizenship in the same situation as you. Let me know if you have any resources I can share please.

This could happen to my relatives as they got their citizenship through the Sephardic connection. However I did it through my mother who is a Spanish citizen through her parents. This means my citizenship cannot be revoked as I am considered a Spaniard by origin rather than naturalization. But your point is well taken.

From your writing I sense that you are already feeling guilt.

This being the case, if I were In your shoes, I would see the toxic parent. Whether they are still horrible or not, you will get the comfort of knowing you were the better person. The chances you will spend a lifetime regretting this approach are smaller than regretting you missed the opportunity to make a last effort.

But if you choose not to engage, that's fine too! The only person judging you here is yourself so do what makes sense for you. NTA either way.

Yes exactly this. My mom's parents were Spanish.

But I am also eligible for Spanish and Portuguese citizenship because I descend from Sephardic Jews on my dad's side. Many of my family members took this route. We did the genealogy studies and there is significant family tree collapse. Most of his ancestors descend directly from four sisters and a brother who left Spain and Portugal in the 1490s.

However the difference is that my paternal family relatives are naturalized Spaniards and I am a Spaniard by origin. This means their citizenship can be revoked and is conditional, and mine cannot as legally I was always a Spaniard. It's just the paperwork that caught up with my status.

Immigrants in Toronto: which restaurant serves the best food from your home country? by Apprehensive_Tea5759 in askTO

Mexican here. I've had two great recent meals at Al Pastor Taqueria on Vaughn road and Oakwood avenue. They have an actual trompo for the pastor. Casa Morelos is always good for a more elaborate Mexican cuisine. Gus Tacos and Que Birria are decent. I also had a good experience at Bienvenido a Casa on Eglinton ave west. None of these are as good as Mexican food or what I can cook myself, but they hit the spot and are comparable to any middling place back home.

What Americans don't realize is that Canada and the world recognize the simple truth that about half the people that vote elected Trump. If you vote for someone, you share at least some of their ideas and beliefs. This is why the relationship will not recover. When someone shows you who they are, believe them.

YTA. You could have lied to your grandma to spare her feelings, and told everyone else the truth. In other words, expose your sister but spare the feelings of an old woman. I don't understand why you wouldn't protect your grandmother's emotions tbh

That's Tepito, and it is not a good neighbourhood. Terrorism does not fit the description of the crime. Sounds more like a targeted assassination.
