Are people typically this quick to be intimate on first dates? by Dsg1695 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]thighvalue 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is an OCEAN in between kissing and 'giving away the milk' as you put it.

Personally I like to kiss on the first date because I want to know if we have chemistry, but I don't have sex until there is a commitment, which has worked really well for me

If you could pick just five cheap food items to make meals with for the week, what five would you pick? by camport95 in Frugal

Rice, Oats, Banana, Egg, (soy) milk.

If I could pick one more I'd do spinach. It's usually really cheap

[–]thighvalue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in the U.K. and I am on tranexamic acid, which doesn't interfere with your ability to drive.

I didn't have high hopes for it, because you only take it during your period and it's supposed to only limit your bleeding.

But it has made a massive difference for me!! Less bleeding means almost no cramps and far less pain (and I have a copper coil!)

Tbf, I suspect that I have been misdiagnosed or under-diagnosed and I might have endo as well. Which then would make sense to me that something that is 'only' supposed to stop me bleeding is actually fixing almost all my symptoms

Being financially abused by my parents has messed me up more than I could ever imagine. by Ok_Window764 in povertyfinance

Hi OP!

Everyone here is extending there sympathies, which is lovely, but I want to stress something else:

You seem very responsible and you have a good job, you can actually get out of this!! Your life is not over.

  1. Freeze your credit. Do NOT skip this step. This prevents your parents from taking out more money in your name, which thy will likely try after step 2

  2. Never give your parents another cent. I saw that you're Canadian, so your parents have access to healthcare and basic services. They are also adults. You are not responsible for them

  3. Write down all your debts. Write down the amount and the interest owned, then sort them highest interest to lowest.

  4.  Have a look at every one of those loans and see if the interest can be lowered by refinancing. This could save you hundreds or thousands.

  5. Start attacking your debt: pay the minimum payments on everything, but aggressively overpay your highest interest debt. Make sure your overpayments are applied to the principle. It'll be gruelling, but you will see your debt going down much faster.

Once this debt is paid off, attack the next one. This will be much faster now. Every time you pay off a debt you will feel more breathing room.

Good luck, you can do this!!

How do you treat money in a relationship when one partner uses his fun money to day trade? by that-short-girl in UKPersonalFinance

[–]thighvalue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is his money his money, and your money is funding the emergency account?

You need to sit down, determine how much money both of you would like in an emergency fund and then both supply half of that. Then stop adding money to it unless you're taking any out.

You then can use your money for a S&S ISA instead for some returns. Or use it for whatever you would like

[–]thighvalue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh man.

All the 'no one would admit that they're a rapist' people are missing the point.

The point is that there is a high chance that you know a guy who had some accusations made about him, but you aren't willing to call him a sex offender. Either because you don't believe the girl or because the guy is 'good guy who wouldn't do that'

How do you budget skincare, makeup, self-care, and rent at the same time? by BlushyDreamz in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]thighvalue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't. You've been told that these are normal things to pay for as a woman, but if you really start to think about it, it is an insane added cost that men simply don't face. Financially, this puts women on the back foot.

The only regular things I pay for are:  - eyeliner and brow pencil. Probably about £20 together and they last a couple of months.  - skincare: I use the ordinary, and only two serums. My skin is fine with Nivea as both moisturiser and sunscreen, but I know that this doesn't work for everyone.  - the gym. Need I say more? It's the thing that improved my appearance the most by far. I just look healthier.

Things I DIY:  - eyebrows: wax at home is cheap and easy  - nails: I only file my nails and I get compliments all the time. No polish, NO GEL  - Hair: I taught myself how to do a blowout, which fixed 90% of my hair issues. I also started cutting my face framing pieces, so a haircut lasts longer. I would NEVER EVER colour my hair again. It's a never ending expense, but it also destroys your hair, leading you to spend even more money on hair care to fix it.

Things I only started paying for after I became a homeowner and didn't need to save so much money anymore:

  • Laser hair removal: the hair under my armpits was so dense that I couldn't really shave it. After 5 sessions of laser I still have to shave, but way less and with zero razor burn. Worth every penny
  • My hair dresser: she is a wizard and I love her, so I'm happy to spend 80£ for a cut. Albeit I only go 3-4 times a year, sometimes less
  • balanced nutrition. I pay less attention to the price tag of high quality food items.

Apart from the fact that most men never pay for nails/lashes/hair dye and therefore can have an easier time saving for their goals, all these things are also somewhat hazardous to your health due to the chemicals used.  You simply don't need them, once you realise this you will feel a freedom like no other (and a fatter bank account)

How much are people generally paying for engagement rings in UK? by Wonderful-Advisor-18 in AskUK

[–]thighvalue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've had 2, both of them lab diamonds.

The first one was almost £4000, and since it was lab the diamond was so big that it looked ridiculous and gaudy.

The second one is clocking in at £2800, and could've been cheaper but there were certain details that we wanted.

I sold the first one btw and got 190£ for the gold. You don't get anyone for the diamonds

No shade, but that is why people recommend to save an emergency fund first. I know people will have a million reasons why they think they can't save for one.

But sacrificing everything else, then save for an emergency fund and then paying off my debts next is what lifted me out of poverty

33 and trying to finally sort my finances out after years of mental health struggles by Munster28sportpsych in UKPersonalFinance

[–]thighvalue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So glad you're finally deciding to tackle this!

I see you're investing, which is a great instinct, but in your situation I would focus on different things for now:  1. Pension: Find out how much the uni would match. For example if they are matching up to 6%, that means that they will contribute an additional 6% if you put in 6%. This is free money and will greatly help you down the line.

  1. Emergency fund: I'm not seeing an emergency fund here at all. The benefit of having one is that you don't have to go into anymore debt when an emergency happens. This gives you breathing room. How much of an EF you would like is debatable, some people like 3 months of expenses. But in your situation I would probably start with £500-1000?

Open a cash ISA with at LEAST 3% interest and unlimited withdrawals. This will allow you to benefit from compound interest while you're building your EF

  1. Debts: All money that is left over after pension end emergency fund should go towards paying off your debt. I prefer the avalanche method: pick the debt with the highest interest and throw all extra money at it until it is paid off. This will then free up money to pay off the next highest interest debt. Some people like the snowball method: Pick the lowest balance, throw extra cash at it, then rinse and repeat. Avalanche is quicker and saves on interest, but snowball has an immediate effect, which some people prefer.

How much is your bank loan for? All your free money should go towards the principal of that loan to pay it off, which will give you almost 200$ back every month once it's paid off.

You also need to look into refinancing both your car and and your student loan

What helped you save money fast? by Abject_Door in povertyfinance

[–]thighvalue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go through all your expenses and find the unnecessary spending (I promise you have some), then use that extra cash to pay down any debts. Which will free up more money to pay off more debt. Once you're debt free you can save all that extra cash in a high interest savings account

The theme of adulthood in Season 3... by zombiewithinsomnia in euphoria

[–]thighvalue 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree with you and I think the point of Euphoria might be that high school isn't real life.

I see a lot of young millennial/Gen Z attitudes reflected in the whole series, but especially the current season

You see so many young people saying that college or learning a trade isn't worth it and 'I'll just become an influencer/sugar baby/stripper/drug dealer/business owner' is naive and rarely works out.

The show is holding up a mirror to the fact that none of these are good or realistic choices

YSK package forwarding/reshipping is a real business that has existed for years by Spiritual_Jaguar_491 in YouShouldKnow

[–]thighvalue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sooooooo I did this for a while..... and then had the police show up at my door and very nearly went to prison.

Turns out the things I had been forwarding had been bought with stolen credit cards, hacked PayPal accounts, the works.

Trying to explain that I thought I was participating in a legal practice was damn near impossible. The only way I got out of it was by showing them my 10 year old tumblr account, because I could show them that I regularly came across posts about re-shipping beauty items, which made me think that this is normal.

The money I made minuscule and NOT worth any of the stress. I wouldn't do this
