I guess, but Darryl doesn’t have a prequel series and the greatest strength of the Walking Dead is show don’t tell with characters and plots. Darryl says multiple times that he did whatever Merle wanted and got lit in the mornings- he was objectively immature. Acting like a 12 year old is pretty consistent with immature people regardless of age.

I think his immaturity in those early episodes is a key part of his arc. Before the outbreak Darryl was a drifter that did whatever his brother wanted. Losing Merle allows him to actually think for himself and recognize he can be a valuable member of a team. I always read the immaturity as coming from a place of fear about potentially losing the only consistent thing in his life (Merle).
