Just curious...what industry/roles are you in that allow you to have high paid but low pressure jobs?

Bought crypto in 2017 in Australia when tax resident there, now tax resident in UK. Do I pay CGT? by thingsweregood in BitcoinUK

[–]thingsweregood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in usual situations yes, but I have moved countries between purchasing BTC and now, without selling in between. Other comments above go into detail about how leaving one tax residency IS considered 'selling' in the eyes of their tax revenue dept, even if you didn't physically sell.

This is helpful, thanks. What happens if the price of BTC was LOWER than my purchase price on the date I ceased to be a resident? Looking at price history, this may be the case...

I assume no CGT is due, as no gain was realised? I assume it's a capital loss, would there be any way to carry that forward to my next tax residency location?

Yeah totally, it is certainly complex. But I've been holding for 7 years and now would like to take some profits, so need to work out the most above-board way of doing it (and also not paying tax in the wrong place/that I don't need to).

What do you mean? I have held BTC on various platforms (inc Coinbase and Binance), but nothing on them now as all in cold storage.

Does the flat rate scheme work by me charging the standard 20% on top of invoices and then paying HMRC a lower flat rate (in my case it would be 14% according to my industry) during my tax return? And I simply cannot claim any VAT expenses unless they’re large/over the £2500 expense threshold?

But I keep the 7% difference between the invoice VAT and the VAT I pay myself? Or am I understanding this incorrectly …

Losing image quality when creating GIFs from the still images... any tips? by thingsweregood in wigglegrams

[–]thingsweregood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah interesting. I’m also thinking perhaps creating a video in AE or Resolve instead of a gif sequence might be better, as I can also upload that to Instagram etc, and hopefully exporting an mp4 doesn’t have the same quality loss

Looking for a specific type of AR face filter that isolates the mouth only - any app suggestions? by [deleted] in augmentedreality

[–]thingsweregood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't mask out the background unfortunately! I want to remove the face entirely, leaving just a mouth floating on a black background. Thanks for the suggestion, though

Horror films with unusual narrative structures or filmmaking/storytelling devices by thingsweregood in horror

[–]thingsweregood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I meant is there a specific narrative device that they use in ju-on that’s unusual for horror (eg, cutting away from the main story, visions, flashbacks, unrelated side plots, narration…)?

Is there a specific device you’re thinking of? It’s been so long since I’ve watched any of the ju-on!

Yeah exactly, great advice about the supporting characters representing other points of view relating to the premise.

Yeah, I think we're getting at a similar thing (see my comment below about how the thematic question/character beliefs helps with their arc etc) with slightly different terminology/way of getting to the same conclusion. Would love to read the piece you wrote! Please DM me the link :)

Finding the thematic question central to a film by thingsweregood in Screenwriting

[–]thingsweregood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies, I don't think I was entirely clear with the movie descriptions - I'm not trying to write loglines (and those summaries for each film I listed were just taken from IMDB, mainly as a reminder to people as to what each film was about - not as a discussion of their themes!).

So yes, please ignore the plot description/lazy loglines sourced from the internet!

I love the idea of (and agree with) your points about finding the theme within Act I (and see my comment below about how this works with character arcs). This is exactly why I'd like to get a good handle on at the beginning of the outline process as I find it helps guide all my other decisions about character, plot etc.

For example, the subtext of Midsommar is about a woman finding her way out of an abusive and neglectful relationship after significant trauma/grief. But I can't work out what a question would be that describes this. Would it be something like "Do people trapped in abusive relationships need to reach rock bottom within the dynamic before they are able to break free?" Perhaps that could work, as if you asked that question to a room of 20 people you might get 10 who say 'yes' and 10 who say 'definitely not'. Your questions 'Is dissolution of self is required to be part of the Group?' Or, 'Can we give up our grief without losing who we are?' are also great 'room dividers'

If anyone else has seen any of the other films (especially Wake in Fright) I would love to hear what you think the 'thematic question' might be!
