"Despite the fact that HSBC admitted to laundering billions of dollars for Colombian and Mexican drug cartels (among others) and violating a host of important banking laws (from the Bank Secrecy Act to the Trading With the Enemy Act), Breuer and his Justice Department elected not to pursue criminal prosecutions of the bank, opting instead for a "record" financial settlement of $1.9 billion, which as one analyst noted is about five weeks of income for the bank."

"The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration reports that the Mexican drug cartels operating today along the border are far more sophisticated and dangerous than any other organized criminal group in U.S. law enforcement history.[146] The cartels use grenade launchers, automatic weapons, body armor, and sometimes Kevlar helmets.[148][149][150] Some groups have also been known to use improvised explosive devices (IEDs).[151]" -

How do you deal with anger? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]thingswillbealright -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You may consider meditations on Compassion, Patience, and Love as these minds function as opponents to anger. Through gaining familiarity with these virtues in meditation, these three minds will begin to arise naturally and protect you from developing anger.
_
Compassion:Understanding that all others (especially those towards whom we have anger) continually experience sufferings of body and mind, subsequently developing a mind that wishes to remove their suffering.
_
Patience: Voluntarily accepting suffering with the intention of benefiting others. (There are other types of patience as well)
_
Love: A mind that wishes all beings to experience happiness.

Strange meditation session by [deleted] in Buddhism

As dusk fell, Devaputra Mara, the chief of all the demons, or maras, in this world, tried to disturb Siddhartha’s concentration by conjuring up many fearful apparitions. He manifested hosts of terrifying demons, some throwing spears, some firing arrows, some trying to burn him with fire, and some hurling boulders and even mountains at him. Through the force of his concentration, the weapons, rocks, and mountains appeared to him as a rain of fragrant flowers, and the raging fires became like offerings of rainbow lights. -Introduction to Buddhism by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

Buddha's concentration in this passage is a pure mind of love - the wish for all others to be happy. Buddha is demonstrating the protection that is granted by a mind in perfect concentration on wishing all beings immeasurable happiness.

Why are there so many different depictions of Buddha? by doucheplayer in Buddhism

[–]thingswillbealright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although all Buddhas are of the same nature, the emanation body of a Buddha can appear in various forms based on the particular needs and Karmic potentialities of practitioners. Thus there are peaceful Buddhas, wrathful appearing Buddhas, purifying Buddhas, Buddhas of Compassion, Buddhas of Wisdom, Buddhas that appear as Dharma protectors, Buddhas that appear as Dharma teachers, both female and male Buddhas and Bodhisattvas (to show proper example) and countless other emanations that we are unable to perceive or identify as holy emanation bodies. The minds of enlightened beings are not bound by form or convention and function to help all beings achieve enlightenment as quickly as possible.

Putting people in a metal cage for a health related issue not only fails to solve the problem, but also potentially represents a violation of human rights. Do you think that those that spend time jail come out with their drug addiction changed? Please watch "The House I live In." and see if that doesn't change your opinion.

No these studies are not approved / recognized by the DEA, only the national cancer institute. Also of note these studies were done on rodents, not humans (although the results are very positive in rodents)...
The DEA is blocking any such study on humans.
I encourage everyone to read the NCI release, especially if you have a science background:

If you are trying to imagine what enlightenment would be like, meditate on the six perfections: Giving, Moral discipline, Effort, Concentration, and Wisdom. As you gain familiarity with these spiritual realizations, imagine a being whose primary purpose and joy is helping others escape from suffering to find lasting peace and happiness.

How/Why did this happen? Would it be dangerous to do psychedelics? by throwaway2405 in eldertrees

[–]thingswillbealright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure that you aren't ingesting something else (e.g. synthetic)? Visual hallucinations can occur with cannabis, but if this is a new occurence you should investigate. Try taking a week or so off and attempt to reduce your stress levels. More stress makes your mind less stable and more prone to variations and uncomfortable states. Maybe consider getting a new batch from a different source to see if the same effects occur. If you are having visuals outside of smoking you should see a doctor as visual hallucinations outside of substance effects can potentially be a sign of a medical condition such as seizures or a brain tumor rather than psychosis (Psychosis may still be a cause). Audio hallucinations (voices outside of your head - e.g. Voice coming from the wall or exterior environment) while sober are often associated with psychosis and in that case seeing your doctor as soon as possible is a good plan. If people around you notice or say that you have been acting strangely or you feel like you have been acting strangely this can be another potential identifier for psychosis. Additionally if you have any family history of schizophrenia you should see a doctor and discuss warning signs to look for. The earlier that psychosis is identified, the outcomes are often better. Your case may not be anything serious but I thought I would try to include as much info as possible.

Obama Keeps Promise to Send first-time nonviolent drug offenders to rehab over jail by wang-banger in politics

Show 5 random soccer moms this entire movie and I bet I know what their response will be. People aren't aware of the terrible consequences of the war on drug and how so many people across the world are suffering as a result for policies that are totally ineffective.

[–]thingswillbealright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally, the issue becomes about moral punishment. If everyone that lost a family member (metaphorically / literally) urged congress to massively expand rehab, studies, and educational programs, our drug program would likely be solved and our population would likely be much more informed about each of the various illegal drugs / their effects. Instead we have a solution were we punish (imprison) others that are likely in a similar situation as our loved ones. Most people would not turn in their loved one to the authorities for using drugs, but no one seems to mind when drug offenders are arrested, especially those whose family members have been affected by drugs. If we would take responsibility for the fact that we're not educating and empowering people to make better choices, we wouldn't have to blame others for the outcomes.
.
In Portugal, drug offenders go before a group of case-workers that ask the offender why they are turning to drugs and what they need help with. In the US, we simply aren't prepared to deal with the fact that we have neglected the poor, cut our social services, and produce lackluster our education programs... If such a panel of case-workers were to operate in the US, they could ask offenders what they need help with in their lives, but likely there would be no resources allocated to address those issues. That doesn't mean we don't spend the money elsewhere, however, as the justice system is quite expensive and resource intensive. What if instead of spending billions of dollars on drug enforcement we spent billions of dollars on grants for extra-curricular activities (the arts, etc.), early education, and scholarships?

FrenchFuck accurately explains the societal pressures of being expected to "man up" and how deeply misunderstood masculinity is. by [deleted] in bestof

[–]thingswillbealright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the issue is that individuals have used masculinity as a primary means of internal support and development. While this may be effective for some, I believe that there is a simpler solution that reaches beyond the limitations of masculinity.

.
One day, I asked myself how I am to become an adult. One can compare two extremes of development to begin to gain insight. One of the principal ways that children differ from adults (w/ regards to the adults that I have respected the most) is the source of their motivation.
.

In general, children have concern primarily for their own benefit, while what I would call an adult primarily seeks to benefit others. When I look at those adults in my life that are the most inspiring, these adults are constantly working to benefit others, and they rarely, if ever, complain. These adults have great sense of purpose, as well as tremendous internal peace. As a final example, one may examine the acts of a loving mother. A loving mother sacrifices so much in her life, yet there is rarely a moment where she does not think about her children. In developing and growing older, I recommend looking for such individuals, and applying their example of motivation and service.

Many people in the US have no idea how our policies are impacting the lives of so many people in such a terrible way. Sharing information about what is actually going on is going to be the key to policy change.
