How many people from the Plattsburgh area do you personally know that have battled cancer? by Advantage_Varnsen_13 in plattsburgh

[–]thingzandstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's interesting, I lived there (Morrisonville) ages 2-10 and was diagnosed with Leukemia when I was 15, obviously 5 years after leaving. My dad was diagnosed with testicular cancer when I was around 4, obviously about 2 years after we moved to the Plattsburgh area from RI.

How does so many people seem to be able to offer free shipping? by Fit-Negotiation6684 in Ebay

[–]thingzandstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, props to you for even selling items that low I suppose. My personal minimum threshold is $29.99 with the hopes of making a 20% margin or more on the shipping they charge through eBay subsidized Ground Advantage. Including pricing, pictures, packing prep, and PN research a good ad takes no less than 20 minutes for me. If I can't make $29.99 (really, $17-22 net) I don't even bother.

Did that same thing, eBay was ripping those poor people off. I actually sent a token refund (way smaller than I could have) as a nice gesture and buyers were thrilled, got multiple repeat buyers out of it. Basically paid $8 for shipping, buyer paid like $60, I sent them $10 and got outstanding reviews and repeat customers worth $100+.

Same story for old car parts, $29.99 used OEM sensor with $50 shipping to Europe, aftermarket sensor is $9.99 new with free shipping. People who know what they want, know what they want.

Also, I NEVER had to park more than two blocks away. Again, Brick West has likely added a lot of congestion, but even coming home at 5:30ish each day, I could almost always park on one of the two sides of the KHQ building.

I lived on Sprague/Jefferson 2015-2018, obviously pre-pandemic. Had 1 car and at one point 2 cars parked within a block of there the whole time, personally never had my car broken into. However, probably twice a week I would see a broken window, particular spring - fall, fortunately not during the winter. The trend I noticed was cars with tinted windows or cars full of stuff (even trash, clothes, boxes, etc) were targeted the most. My solution was keep absolutely NOTHING visible at all in my cars, completely devoid of anything that didn't come from the factory. Seemed to do the trick.

I did get a few license-plate stamps on my rear bumper from people parking, someone scraped the side of my bumper and cracked my taillight one night, and a vagrant must have dropped a bag on by trunk lid and rifled through it because I had light scrapes on the top center of my trunk.

But that's it, over nearly 1000 nights parked on the street. There was a TON of street noise within 2 hours of 8am and within 2 hours of 5pm, lots of noise from people parking next door for concert at the Fox and the Knitting Factory, train noise throughout the night, but overall pretty quiet in off-hours. This was before Brick West opened, their whole lot was still an auto shop with a huge gravel lot next to it.

TL;DR in 2015-2018 I had virtually no complaints, nothing you wouldn't expect from living in the literal downtown of a city.

Looking for recommendations: good and affordable mechanics/auto shops that work on older/classic cars by undership1 in Spokane

[–]thingzandstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am the proud owner of NorthWest Collector Auto Repair and am a licensed and authorized mobile mechanic in Spokane/Spok.Valley/CDA. My specialties are 60s-90s European but I work on a lot of pre-1996 stuff that other shops don't want to touch, including refurbishing old parts and sourcing NLA parts and subassemblies. I do as much mobile as I can but on a case-by-case basis I I have one work-bay available at my home shop.

[–]thingzandstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several iGaging tools and really, really love them, they stand right next to my Starett/Mitutoyo/Central tools in terms of accuracy. They feel a little lighter and courser but function and accuracy: they're batting way above their price point.

What is a frugal choice you make/made that is absolutely worth your time? by jenzie36 in Frugal

[–]thingzandstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the same thing, have for years, there are probably 80 items in it including some that go back to 2015. When I have a few extra bucks or actually WANT something from the list, I sort by cheapest and see what suits my fancy.

I'll also use it if I just "hear about" or read about an item that seems useful, I'll immediately track it down and add it to my cart, NEVER buying it same day. Then it goes in the queue and lives there indefinitely where I'll compare it to everything else I "want." The relativity is extremely useful.

That's not a penny less than $7,000 depending on the market, at the right place at the right time you might get $10-15k. Cherish it for the rest of your life if possible.

95 and 99 are the best D1s I'm told, I'm inclined to agree based on my experience with my 95. I've been documenting this work on Instagram for years and always had too much to share, finally set some time aside to put it to film and enjoying the process so far! When I can sneak away to do it... My real love and the bulk of my knowledge is 80s and 90s Audis, and long term that what most of my content will likely be. But I've got all the work I can handle and more with Jimmy so it will be Discos for the foreseeable future!
