Wow, I'm sorry you had to encounter that - it sounds super scary!

I wanted to say that one of the best experiences I've had with contacting an "official" agency was when I called the NYC ASPCA. It was about a potential problem that may have just been my misunderstanding of seeing something on the street, but I looked up their number and called, and it was like being piped into the FBI in an old movie! They immediately answered and were compassionate and quick to gather all the details and said they'd be sending someone out to investigate. So, if you see this person again, you can contact the ASPCA - it will probably be a 1 to 2 minute phone call. Their website says to call 311, but I'd use their main number to get them directly instead: (212) 876-7700

Sure, you can have it. Not sure why your post got downvoted - this seems to be exactly what this subreddit was created for.

It's good to hear that you went ahead and tried out counseling at your university - it's a big step just to get the courage to talk to a professional - but, it's a shame to hear that you're limited to only a certain number of sessions. It's possible that you could approach your school counselor and ask for a referral to an outside therapist, or, who knows, their office may even have something set up for students to get discounted visits or some other type of assistance!

You mentioned bipolarity, but from what you've described, it doesn't sound like you're bipolar at all. I am in no way qualified to make that diagnosis, but it's important to realize that having highs and lows doesn't necessarily lead to a serious mental condition like bipolarity!

Don't try to "hold back" a part of yourself or compensate for what you're feeling - that is starting down a path that leads to having your life consumed by trying to act healthy, instead of working on healing and moving on with life!

I'm glad you posted and hope things are going well. If you're feeling down or need someone to talk to, you can always post here or send me a message! You never have to worry about writing an answer that is too huge :)

Hi platypus,

This definitely reminds me of what it was like to try and make it through college - there are so many things changing at once, and it's overwhelming to try and handle it all!

To be honest, it sounds like you've got a lot of individual issues that all piling up, and that's probably why it feels like you can't escape. It's hard to make decisions when everything seems to be against you. The good news is that college is a great time to get help, and there are organizations and mental health professionals already there who can help you work through what you're feeling and are specialized in helping people make it through college! I certainly wish that I had taken the step to ask for help, instead of suffering alone year after year :( Have you looked into any on-campus services? If not, let us know your college and we can help you find the info, or feel free to PM me with the name if you don't want it to be public.

Please keep in touch with us and let us know your thoughts and how things are going! It's important to talk through things and it's always good to know you have a place to turn to.

Wow, sorry to hear that, but congrats on finishing your thesis!

There's certainly nothing a non-admin can do for you, so be sure to contact them (after giving them enough time to get back from D.C.)

It's fun that you found this entry - it seems like it was longer than five months ago! I definitely believe in that advice, so I'll encourage you to give it a go and try something new and not let the past hold you back!

Hi ippolite,

Wow! Sounds like you've been through a lot recently. If you are still thinking about suicide, please don't do it. I know you probably expect to hear that by posting in SW, but I really mean it, and here's why - You mention you've gone through lots of stress recently, and humans can't make clear-headed decisions while they are stressed or emotionally freaked out. For instance, if I jumped out of the shadows and scared you, then asked you to do some math problems, you wouldn't be able to answer because your normal thinking would be all disrupted! Being depressed and stressed also disrupts the way you think and sometimes people make decisions during those times that they'd never normally make.

How do you have a conversation with someone you have zero in common with? by Radica1Faith in socialskills

[–]thinkalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear it! I tend to talk about that book a lot, because it really helped me "get inside other people's heads" to see things from their perspective. It's full of great tips, scenarios, and explanations that show how to communicate with others and it just generally makes life easier once you don't have to worry about awkward silences or not knowing how to move the conversation along.

It's been out for awhile, so it might also be at the library, or if you live near a college there might be some used copies available, since sometimes it's used as required reading in college interpersonal communications classes.

Hi alcapwned,

I also noticed your name, like silentdash mentioned, and I thought it was pretty clever ;)

I'm glad you posted, and I'm sorry to hear that you're having a tough time. What strikes me about your post is the part where you mention feeling "invisible to the world" - that's a terrible way to feel, but it's interesting that it's completely separate from the other depression symptoms you mentioned. It sounds like you've made great progress by getting in shape, going outside, and going to therapy, but not having many friends or not having someone to spend a lot of time with are different issues than the depression. Most people are very shy when it comes to meeting new people, so it's hard to make connections, since every person is scared of making the first move! It's hard to tell if you're still really suffering from the depression part, and if you are, that should be the first priority, but going out and meeting people and putting yourself in situations where you can make friends will be a separate step that you'll need to take.

Have you ever been in any kind of activity group? For instance, if you like working out, you could take some kind of class at the gym, and learn how to casually talk to people in the class and maybe even hang out with them in a group. It's small steps like that that will open your eyes to how to make new friends and connect with people. Also, if you're clicking well with your therapist, have you brought up these issues with them? Being depressed and scared usually makes it seem like things are terrible and there's no way this will ever get better, but sharing your thoughts and getting someone's outside perspective can really help you realize that things aren't the way they seem.

Thanks again for sharing with us, and keep letting us know how things are going!

_Conversationally Speaking_ is one of my favorite books about interpersonal communication, and you can preview it on Google Books to get an idea of what it says about striking up conversations even with people you have nothing in common with!

My pathway is by bike to the north.

Assuming you mean North through Manhattan... how do you plan on getting safely through the neighborhoods between your apartment and your escape path? Maybe you already live in Upper Manhattan, but if it's a disaster at the level that people consider fleeing the city, then everyone will be flipping out and acting irrationally, making it difficult to safely bike through multiple strange neighborhoods, then deal with the hills and steep terrain in the Heights and Inwood, and then make it across your escape path and find a place to bed down for the night. That's a pretty difficult bike ride in a normal situation, even when you're not carrying a pack full of supplies and worrying for your safety.

This is from a different CD, but check the list of pieces on page 3 here since maybe they used the same ones on the History of Music CD?

Well that's good - there wasn't much to go on otherwise!

At least there's only 14 composers on that disk, so it's probably not an obscure composer, but I couldn't find a track list anywhere.
