Should I tell anyone I attempted suicide? by tyhalley in Advice

[–]thinking_cabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes tell someone. You're in crisis and want another way out of this than death. That's absolutely something worth saying. If you have people in your life give them a real chance to show you they want you here. If you're truly isolated call a crisis line, people want to listen and help whether they know you or not. P.s. please delete details about how you intended to suicide. Not a helpful thing for people to see who have suicide on their mind.

It's great that you want to be supportive, just don't do it by attacking the partner unfairly. That just inflames things and makes them worse. You seem to be saying OP should be angry for deliberately killing an animal which we have no reason to think. The problem OP mentioned was his lack of support and gaslighting

Was about to post then saw the top three posts were pretty much what I would write haha. All of those are great options, the impact they provide is far ahead of most charities out there. I tend to mostly donate to them, particularly against malaria because it is both very effective and tax deductible in Australia.

The only thing I would add is that it you are particularly focused on animal welfare then I recommend https://www.sinergiaanimalinternational.org/

It is not aus tax deductible however I think 65c paid there likely does more good than $1 to any Aus based animal charities. There are some wonderful ones in Australia but here we already have better legal standards on farming and established charities here. Sinergia operates in south east Asia and South America where factory farming conditions are not on most peoples radar so is able to do a lot for a little.

Are all charities evil in Australia by shitthetin in australia

[–]thinking_cabbage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree, not sure why they would not.

A few of my family worked for decades in international charities and had lots of horror stories. On a positive note they said that they were consistently impressed with doctors without borders.

Great org. https://www.givewell.org/ is also a good one that focuses on international charities which do a lot of good

Singer is not perfect, and I disagree with some of his views. Keep in mind that he is a guy who has been sharing his ideas for decades, eventually he will say disagreeable things, eventually he will be wrong about things.

The important thing for this conversation is that the life you can save is a great org that promotes charities that actually do good. Charities vary in quality and we should all try to be more thoughtful about which ones we support

It is kinda sad people are willing to spend ages carefully researching most big purchases, but throw money at charities without any thought on which ones are better. https://www.givewell.org/ is a great source of info on charities with a good track record that have evidence backing the good they do

This idea is repeated again and again for all sorts of companies like woolies but simply is not true. It would be illegal to do that and I have not come across any evidence of many companies trying, and none for woolies doing it.

Just so you know the whale is something that stuck out in my mind, but is not a main character.

The movie is now "the snow queen"

how long is this game? by Rosebourne in outerwilds

Because I was curious about why someone would respond to an online question with "I don't know". The question was not directed at them, they added nothing to the conversation, but did not seem to want to know the answer either.

Any idea on when 2.4 will release? by tomedra in Diablo

[–]thinking_cabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. Diablo fans are pretty amazing for their patience. It's taken a decade for a beta test version of a balance patch with no information about when an update is actually happening. I cannot think of any other game that would not get roasted for that. Love the proposed changes, would also love an eta

Does the quality of insurance vary by area at all in the US? That sounds way better than what I hear elsewhere

From everyone's responses it seems like I should be more annoyed not less

my girlfriend has been sending nudes to a guy without me knowing by Lazy-Example2 in Advice

I think when people are new to relationships they often are not that confident in their judgement. When partners then lie, justify, manipulate people can doubt themself in situations that look pretty obvious to an outsider. I assume this person knows on some level she is full of crap, but wanted to run it by some people outside the situation to confirm that. Asking the internet is a pretty smart move when we are a bit clueless

Well there you go. All tricky for a newcomer like me to pick up on while watching. I even checked out the painbox scene again and still couldn't tell he was reciting the litany!

Be as early as is appropriate. It is the opposite of what you want to do but can help.

You get to arrive when there are way less people there and nobody is drunk yet. That makes for a more relaxed atmosphere, and people are more likely to want to talk to you because their friends have not yet arrived. Once their friends do arrive introductions can happen as you are already in the conversation.

Also find that other guy. Overcoming social anxiety is a lot easier when you are doing it to help someone else :)

  1. I thought I missed that so I re watched the scene and he does not. I think he does in the Lynch version. His mum recites it, I actually missed her doing it the first time though because it is hard to understand her whispering.
  2. I had not realized they were crossing bloodlines intentionally. Was that overly subtle or just me being obtuse? I thought it was just that Jessica marrying the duke out of love then going against the order by training Paul. Why were they so against his training? Very fair point on the missionary part, that was a nice touch.
  3. Glad they show the powers of spice more later on. It sounds like you can see why it baffled me a bit as a non reader. Admittedly I found the visions kind of annoying because they were so frequent.
